"offense" には 「軍事的な攻撃」 という意味が
ありますが、"second offense" の "offense" は
「法的・社会的・道徳的規範を犯すこと」を指し、
"second offense" は、
「 再 犯 」
のことをいいます。
ヒチコック劇場に ある意図を持って再び犯罪を
犯して刑務所に戻った男を描いた作品があります。
"What Frightened You, Fred ? " (何を怖がって
いたんだ、フレッド ？ ) というタイトルです。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Fred Riordana は 保釈されたばかりなのに、
酒場で喧嘩し、保釈後 48時間も経たぬうちに
再逮捕され刑務所へ放り込まれた。
彼は 窃盗の罪で 4年服役し 保釈時には 更生
の意気込みをみせ、温厚そうな男のようであった。
看守と刑務所の精神科医は 彼が 一体 何故
酔っ払って 昔馴染みの酒場をメチャメチャに
壊したのか、何が彼をそうさせたのか について
解明しようとしていた。
彼は 保釈後２日間に起きたことを 語り始めた。
娑婆の何かが彼を怯えさせているに違いない、
それが 一体何なのかを突き止めよう、と精神科医
は決心した。」
(Fred Riordan is a recent parole who, getting into a bar fight,
is re-arrested less than 48 hours after his release and thrown
back into prison.
He served four years for robbery and on his release, seems like
a mild mannered man who is intent on making a go of it.
He recounts to the warden and prison psychiatrist the events
during his two days of freedom as they try to determine what
may have caused him to get drunk and break up a bar in his old
neighborhood.
The psychiatrist is convinced that something in the outside world
frightened him and probes to determine exactly what that was.)
「看守と精神科医は Fred が 何故 怖れているのか
を知ろうとした。
ところが、まったく 別のことが 起きつつあること を
この ふたりは 知る由もなかった。
Fred は ふたりに 次のように語った。
出所して 昔馴染みの酒場に行ったのだが、そこじゃ
誰も オレのことなんか 仲間に入れてくれやしない
んだ。
で、Tony Wando という暴力団員の男が オレに近づい
てきて 彼のダチ公のひとりを 殺(や)ってくれ、と オレ
に頼んできたのさ。
オレは 請(う)けた振りをしたんだが、そんな事は やる
積りはないから 身の安全な刑務所へ戻れるように
ひと騒動を起こしたのさ、と Fred は ふたりに言った。
看守の Bragen は Fred を憐(あわ)れんで 一か月間
洗濯班で仕事をさせ、模範犯であることから Bragen 自身
の事務所の部屋で 気楽な事務仕事を させるようにした。
これで Fred にとって 完璧な環境が用意された。
というのは、殺(や)れ、と頼まれた その相手というのが
看守の Bragen だったからだ.............）
（They try to find out why. But little do they know that there is some-
thing altogether different taking place.
Fred tells them that when he got out of prison he went to his old
neighborhood bar and realized that no one wanted him around.
He tells them that he was contacted by a mobster named Tony
Wando who wanted him to kill an associate of his.
Fred tells them that he pretended to go along with it, but arranged
to go back to prison to get out of the deal.
Warden Bragen feels sorry for Fred and arranges for him to get a
comfortable desk job in the warden's office after a month of laundry
detail and good behavior.
This is perfect for Fred because it is Warden Bragen that he was
in fact contracted to hit.................）
