コロナ禍は 世界中で 既に 70万人余の犠牲者を
出していますが、"bubonic plague" は 「腺ペスト」
のことで、最も流行った 14世紀には 欧州、アジア、
アフリカで 5千万人余もの犠牲者を出したといわれ
ていますね。
因みに、"bubonic" は ラテン語 "bubon"(股) から
英語に入ったもので、「鼠経リンパ腺腫を伴った」 と
いう意味、 "plague" は 「死亡率の高い伝染病、特に
ペスト」 という意味ですね。
ヒッチコック劇場に この疫病をネタにした作品があり
ます。
"Into Thin Air" (跡形もなく 掻き消えて) という
タイトルです。
ちょっと 覗いてみることに いたしましょう。
「1899年、パリでのこと。
英国婦人 Winthrop と 娘の Diana は 帰国の途時、
パリ万国博覧会をみるために パリのホテルに宿泊
した。」
(Paris, 1899. British Mrs. Winthrop and her daughter Diana are
on their way home via France visiting Paris World's Exposition,
and check into a Paris hotel. )
「ところが、Winthrop婦人が 病気になり 容体が急変
してしまった。
ホテルの嘱託医は (手元に治療薬がないので) 薬を
嘱託医の自宅に行って 取ってくるよう (妻あてのメモ
を持たして) Diana を 自宅に向かわせた。
(嘱託医の妻は まるで時間稼ぎするかのように ノロ
ノロと 薬の準備をして Diana に その薬を持たせた。）
Diana が ホテルに戻ると、フロント係をはじめ、この
ホテルの従業員が みんな Diana のことなど知らぬ
様子で、Winthrop 母娘 が このホテルに宿泊している
という記録もなかった。」
(Mrs. Winthrop is suddenly seriously ill, and the hotel doctor sends
Diana to his home for medicine. When Diana returns, the front-
desk clerk and other hotel employees claim to have no recollection
of her, nor is there any record that the Winthrops were ever there. )
「Diana は 自分の気が おかしくなってしまうのでは
ないかと 不安になり始めた。
Diana は 助けを求めて 領事館に駆け込んだ。しかし
誰も Diana の言うことなど 信じてはくれない。でも、
唯ひとり Basil Farnham だけが Diana の言うことを
信じてくれた。
ホテルに行った Diana と Basil は Diana と母親が
泊まっていた部屋を見せて欲しいと ホテル側に
迫った。
だが、その部屋は Diana が Basil に説明していた
部屋とは まるで 別物のように 違っていた。
(壁紙が ほんのさっき張り替えたような痕跡を発見
した) Diana は 壁紙を 思い切り剥(は)がした。
そこに 用意周到な陰謀が巡らされていることが
分かった。」
(Diane begins to fear that she is going insane. Diana goes to the
embassy, where her story is believed only by Basil Farnham.
Diana and Basil demand to see the room, which is very different
from Diana's description, but Diana rips off the wallpaper, proving
that there is a conspiracy at hand. )
「この隠蔽工作は フランス政府の差し金で行われた
ことが判明した。
何故なら、Winthrop婦人の死因が (恐ろしい伝染病の)
腺ペストであったからだ。
(万国博覧会で ごった返す) パリの観光客に集団ﾊﾟﾆｯｸ
が起きぬように ホテル挙(こぞ)って Diana の母親の
存在を 掻き消そうとしたのである。」
(The cover-up is revealed to have been set in place by the French
government, because Mrs. Winthrop died of bubonic plauge.
Fearing a public panic in tourist filled Paris, everyone in the hotel
conspired to make it look as if her mother had never existed.)
自分の処からは 恐ろしい伝染病患者は出ていない、と
言いたいのは 古今東西 変わらぬ心情のようです。
