お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"gentleman caller" は 元来 女性のもとに来訪
する 「求婚者」(suitor) という意味ですが、単に、
「 カ レ シ 」 (彼氏)
という意味でも使われるようです。
ヒッチコック劇場に "The Gentleman Caller" と
いうタイトルの作品がありますが、この 「カレシ」
は とんでもないヤツ なのです。
でも、この ウワテ が いました。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Gerald と Milly のカップルは 銀行の夜警を撃ち殺し、
１０万ドルを盗み出した。
だが、この大金を どこに隠せばいいのか 分からない。
Gerald は 保釈中なので 盗んだ大金を 資金洗浄して
出処(でどころ) を隠さねばならないのだ。
警察に出会わぬように 気をつけながら逃げていた処、
近くの街路で 年老いた、見た目にも高齢の Emmy
Rice という名の女性が困っていたので手助けした。
彼女の家を訪れた Gerald は 家の中に乱雑に積ま
れた古雑誌の山の中に 盗んできたお金を隠した。
後日、Gerald は 体が弱ってきた Emmy をせかして
遺書を書かせた。Emmy の部屋で見つかったお金は
すべて Gerald のものである、という内容だ。
彼女のもの を すべて 相続するようにしておきたい
のである。そうしておけば 彼女を殺して 彼女の金
を 法的に何の問題もなく 相続できる、というわけだ。」
(The coupe Gerald and Milly steal $100,000 dollars, shooting and
killing a bank night watchman, but don't know where to hide the
money. Since he is on parole, he must launder the loot.
On the street nearby, while eluding police, Gerald befriends an
elderly and apparently senile woman named Emmy Rice.
After a visit to her home, Gerald stashes the money in a stack
of old magazines. Later Gerald prods impoverished Emmy into
writing a will, awarding all money found in her apartment to himself.
He wants to be the beneficiary of all her belongings so that he
can murder her and gain legal possession of the money. )
「Emmy は 遺書を書いたのだが、彼女を殺す企ては
幾度が失敗した。
カップルは また Emmy のもとを 訪ねた。
彼女の家に着いた ふたりは 驚いた。
なんと、警察が来ているではないか。
Emmy が 殺人未遂で ふたりを責め立てた。
ガスで殺そうとした、というので Emmy は Milly を
警察に逮捕して貰おうと 待ち構えていたのだ。
Gerald も 逮捕された。
警察に連行される前に Gerald は 盗んだ大金を
隠した古雑誌が なくなっているのに気が付いた。
家主さんから 古雑誌を 全部 くず屋に 売り払って
くれ、と言われたんでね、と Emmy は Gerald に
言った。
ところが、カップルが 警察に連行されて行った後、
Emmy は 冷蔵庫を開けた。そこには くすねた札束
が ギッシリと 隠されていたのだ。」
(Emmy draws up a will but several attempts on her life fail.
The couple returns to visit the old woman again.
When they arrive, they are startled to see the police.
Emmy accuses them of attempted murder.
Emmy arranges for the arrest of Milly Musgrove for attempting
to gas her to death. Gerald is apprehended too.
Before the police escort him away, Gerald sees that the magazines
where he stashed the money are gone.
Emmy tells him that her landlord told her to throw all the magazines
away to a junk collector.
After the Musgroves are led away, however, Emmy opens her
icebox where she has hid all of the purloined bills. )
