"perfect" は ラテン語 "per- 完全に" ＋ "ficere
行う) の合成語 "perficere"(完成させる) の過去
分詞形 "perfectus" が英語に入り変化したようです。
「完全な (ものにする)」という形容詞(及び動詞) として
使われますが、意外な意味もありますね。
印刷で 「両面刷りの」、「両面刷りにする」という意味
があります。

さて、ヒッチコック劇場の中に "Perfect Murder" という
タイトルの作品があります。
こちらの "perfect" は「完全な」の方ですね。
殺人の完全犯罪、って うまくいったのでしょうか。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Henri と 弟の Paul は 最近 亡くなった叔父の遺書
公開に立ち合い、叔父の遺産は すべて 叔母の
Rosalie が引き継ぐことになっているのを知った。
だが、叔母が亡くなれば ふたりの甥が 叔母の遺産を
分けることになっていた。
興奮してやって来たふたりも いまは これといって
手立てがないので しょんぼりした。」
(Henri and his brother Paul attend the reading of their recently
departed uncle's will, and learn that their Aunt Rosalie inherits
everything, but that after her death the two nephews are to
share the firtune.
The excitement of the two brothers is tempered by their present
lack of resources. )

Paul decides to win over his aunt, and they soon moves in with her.
The two brothers then look for a way to kill her without arousing

(Paul has Henri grind glass into fine powder, and Paul adds it to the
egg mixture that is supposed to make a soufflé for Rosalie's dinner.
However, that night Rosalie insists on eating fish, instead.
The next morning Paul dies when he eats an omelette for breakfast
made out of the lethal egg mixture.)

が、一方、残念ながら、やがて警察がやって来て、叔母

Unfortunately, however, he thinks that the police will come and that
he will go to jail for the attempted murder of his aunt and the acci-
dental murder of his brother..................)
