お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"nest egg" は 「(本物又は模造の)抱き卵」のこと
ですが、比喩的に
「不時に備えて使わずに大切に貯めたお金」
という意味でも使われます。
要するに 「虎の子」 のことですね。
最近 この 虎の子を狙って 独居老人宅に押し入る強盗事件
が頻発しています。 ご用心ください。
ヒッチコック劇場の "There Was an Old Woman"
(ある ばあさん が いたとさ) は そんな独居老人の お話
です。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「戸口で 牛乳配達員を迎えた 老女の Monica
Laughton は また親戚が ひとり 亡くなった、と
話した。
この牛乳配達員は 帰り道、喫茶店に入った。
そこで カウンターにいた男と Laughton ばあさん
が貯めているお金のことやら あの ばあさんは
変わり者だ、という風なことを話していた。
この話を Frank Bramwell という男が盗み聞き
していて、妻の Lorna を連れて その Laughton
ばあさんの家へ行き、お金を巻き上げようと
企んだ。」
(Elderly Monica Laughton greets the milkman, and tells him
that another relative of hers has passed away.
The milkman then stops at a cafeteria, where he discusses
Miss Laughton's wealth and eccentricity with the man at
the counter.
The conversation is overheard by Frank Bramwell, who then
plans to visit Miss Laughton with his wife Lorna, so that they
can rob her. )
「その Monica Laughton ばあさんは とても変わった
人で、いもしない架空の親族のひとりが亡くなった
のを みんなに知らせようとすると 戸口に 葬儀用の
花輪を飾る、という 妙な習慣を持っていた。
Frank, Lorna 夫婦は 老婆が貯め込んだお金を巻き
上げようと この一風変わった Monica の館を訪れた。」
(Monica Laughton is an eccentric old woman who has the strange
habit of hanging a funeral wreath on her door when she wants
to announce the passing of one of the members of her imaginary
family.
The couple, Frank and Lorna, go to the mansion of eccentric
Monica Laughton to rob her.)
「ふたりは この館のどこかに ため込んだお金が
隠されているに違いない、と信じ込んでいた。
館に入る時、ふたりは Monica ばあさんの遠い
親戚だということにした。
ふたりは がらんとした大広間に通され、そこで
いもしない架空の親族に紹介され、次に 蓋の
開いた空っぽの棺桶を見せられた。
ふたりは 目を皿のようにして くまなく家じゅうを
探したのだが 何も 目ぼしいもの は見つから
なかった。」
(They believe she has money stashed away in the house.
When they reach her home, they pose as distant relatives.
They are shown into an empty parlor, where she introduces them
to a number of imaginary relatives, and shows them an open,
empty coffin.
They search the house, but don't find anything. )
「苛立った Frank は Monica ばあさんを脅した。
が、そんなことを まるで気にしない ばあさんは
いもしない架空の猫に 平気で餌をやっていた。
Monica ばあさん が イカれていて どんなに脅そ
うとも 平気の平左なので、ふたりの企みはメチャ
クチャになってしまったのだ。
お金どころか ロクに食い物さえないので ふたりは
疲れ果てて イライラしてきた。」
(Frank threatens Monica, but she ignores him and begins to
feed her imaginary cat.
The plan goes awry because Laughton is crazy and wholly
unresponsive to their threats.
The Bramwells become tired and frustrated, because they
cannot find any money and there seems to be no food
in the house.)
「このばあさんは 気が狂っているのではないか、と
不安になってきた 妻の Lorna は もう帰ろう、と言い
だした。
だが、夫の Frank は これは 考えていた以上に いい
チャンスだ、と考え、お金を手にいれるには少々手荒な
こともできる、と思った。
次の朝、ふたりは 朝飯に カップケーキを いくつか
食べた。
Monica ばあさんは そのケーキは ネズミのために
焼いてやったもんだよ、と言った。
Frank と Lorna のふたりは ぶっ倒れて死んだ。
ケーキには (殺鼠剤の) ヒ素が入っていたのだ。
Monica は 戸口に 葬儀花輪をふたつ 懸けた。
みんなは あの Monica ばあさんが また 空想に
耽っている、と思った。
Monica ばあさんの 虎の子は 実は しょっちゅう
持ち歩いている手提げの中にしまっていたことが
分かった..............」
(Fearing that she is insane, Lorna Bramwell wants to leave,
but Frank sees the situation as an even better opportunity
than he'd hoped for - and he is not above using force to
get what he wants.
The next morning Frank and Lorna eat several cupcakes for
breakfast.
Monica says that she cooked the cupcakes for mice.
Frank and Lorna fall over dead because the cupcakes were
laced with arsenic.
Monica hangs two wreaths on her door and everyone assumes
she is just imagining again.
Laughton's fortune turns out to be inside a handbag that
she carries everywhere with her......................)
