前回に続き、英国王室に現在も残る ”謎” に
ついて Reader's Digest から拾って いくつか
見てみましょう。
「ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王には ２人目の非公開夫がいた ？
1861年に夫君のｱﾙﾊﾞｰﾄ殿下が逝去し、憔悴した
ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王は 前例のない２年間もの喪に服す
ことを公にした。
1863年に 女王は 彼女の従者である ｼﾞｮﾝ･ﾌﾞﾗｳﾝ
と極めて親しい個人的な関係を持ち始めたものと
思われる。この関係は２０年間続いた。(ｼﾞｮﾝ･ﾌﾞﾗｳﾝ
が56歳で亡くなるまで)
ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王の顧問たちは 随分 失望した。
というのは、国民は 女王を "ﾌﾞﾗｳﾝ夫人" と呼ぶし、
彼女の子供たちは ｼﾞｮﾝ のことを "ママ の 恋人"
と呼んでいたからである。
ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王は ｼﾞｮﾝ を まるで王室の一員である
かのように扱い、彼に家を贈ってやるほどであった。
女王の日記には 溢れるほど ｼﾞｮﾝ のことばかりが
書かれており、また、自分の亡骸には ｱﾙﾊﾞｰﾄ と
ｼﾞｮﾝ のふたりの思い出の品を添えて埋葬するよう
にと書き遺していた。」
( Did Queen Victoria Have A Secret Second Husband ？
After Prince Albert’s death in 1861, a distraught Queen
Victoria declared an unprecedented two-year royal
mourning period. In 1863, she may have begun a close,
personal relationship with her servant, John Brown,
lasting 20 years (until John’s death at age 56).
To the chagrin of Victoria’s advisors, the public referred
to Victoria as “Mrs. Brown,” and her children referred
to John as “Mama’s Lover.” Victoria treated John
like a member of the family, even gifting him a house.
Her diaries are filled with gushing references to him,
and her final wishes had her buried with mementos of
both Albert and John. )
「王室の誰かが 切り裂き魔 だったのか ？
ｱﾙﾊﾞｰﾄ･ｳﾞｨｸﾀｰ王子は ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王の孫で、
ｴﾄﾞﾜｰﾄﾞ７世の長男であったが 父親よりも早く、
28歳で夭逝し 王位には就けなかった。
彼は ｴﾃﾞｲｰ と呼ばれていたが、この ｴﾃﾞｲｰ が
1888年に ﾛﾝﾄﾞﾝ の ﾎﾜｲﾄﾁｬﾍﾟﾙ地区で起きた
5件の婦女連続殺人事件の犯人 切り裂きｼﾞｬｯｸ
ではなかったか、という風に歴史に残っており、
或る人たちは そうであったろうと信じている。
事件発生時に ｴﾃﾞｲｰ は 殺人現場近くには
いなかった、という新聞報道もあるのだが、それ
に対する疑義が呈され 現在も 疑義は続いている。
それは ｴﾃﾞｲｰ の 謎めいた生活 (彼は 隠れたる
同性愛者であったようだ) と 死 が関わっている。
彼は 1892年に ｲﾝﾌﾙｴﾝｻﾞ で 死んだ、ということ
になっているが、実は 梅毒で死んだのであって、
梅毒によって脳神経が冒され精神異常を起こし
末期の苦しみの中で犯した殺人事件である、と
信じている人たちもいるのだ。」
( Was Someone In The Royal Family Jack The Ripper ？
Prince Albert Victor, a grandson of Queen Victoria, was
the eldest son of King Edward VII but predeceased his
father at age 28 and so never became king. But Eddy,
as he was nicknamed, will go down in history as someone
people believe(d) was Jack the Ripper, the killer of at
least five women in the Whitechapel section of London
in 1888. Although news reports indicated Eddy was no-
where near Whitechapel at the time, questions arose
and continue to this day because of Eddy’s mysterious
life (it seems he was a closeted gay man) and death—
he died of influenza in 1892, but some believe he died
of syphilis and might have committed the murders while
in the throes of syphilitic insanity. )
「ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘ女王の孫息子は自殺したのか ？
1899年2月6日に ｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ女王の孫息子 ｱﾙﾌﾚｯﾄﾞ
王子が 24歳で亡くなった時、新聞は 腫瘍が死因
であると伝えた。
だが、情況からは 王子が 両親の結婚25周年式典
の最中に拳銃で自身に向けて発砲し その後すぐに
死亡した、というのが事実であるようだ。
若き王子は 幼い頃 感激性の強い子であったらしく、
大人になって 短い人生であったが、叔母のｳﾞｨｸﾄﾘｱ
女王に ”放蕩者” と呼ばれていた。」
( Did Queen Victoria’s Grandson Kill Himself ？
When Prince Alfred, the 24-year-old grandson of Queen
Victoria died on February 6, 1899, the press reported a
tumour had caused his death. But the circumstances
strongly suggest he shot himself with a revolver during
his parents’ 25th-anniversary celebration and died soon
after. The young prince was known to have had an
emotionally challenging childhood, and his short adulthood
was described by his aunt Vicky, as “dissipated.” )
