お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"treasure" は ラテン語 "thesaurus"(倉庫) が英語に入った
もので、倉庫に大切にしまっている、ということからか、
「貴金属・宝石・金銀貨などの財宝」
という意味で使われますが、もうひとつ とても重要な
意味があります。
「テキパキと仕事をこなす家政婦・召使」
という意味です。
これは きっと "とても貴重で大切なひと" ということからきたものでしょう。
"Our Cook's a Treasure" というタイトルの作品がヒッチコック劇場の中にあります。
料理人として雇った家政婦さんが とても 気のつくいい人だ、ということのようですが............
ご一緒に ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Ralph Montgomery は 不動産屋である。
気儘な妻のご機嫌をとるために 料理人として Suttonさんという家政婦を雇った。
ところが、料理人を騙(かた)った女が ３人もの人を殺して逃亡中で 警察が追っている、という記事を新聞で知り、雇った Sutton について 考え直していた。」
(Ralph Montgomery is a real estate agent. He pampers his wife by
hiring a cook named Mrs. Sutton. He has second thoughts about
Sutton, however, when he discovers that police are looking for a
woman serial-murderer who has killed three people posing as a
cook and is on the loose. )
「Ralph が 仕事中に 激しい腹痛に見舞われた。
Sutton のことを ますます 疑うようになった Ralph は Sutton が 彼のために作ったホット・ココアを 家から持ち出し 毒物検査をして貰った。
検査結果、ココアには 危険な量のヒ素が混入されていることが分かり、Ralph は 愕然とした。」
(Ralph gets violent cramps at work.
Growing suspicious of Sutton, Ralph takes a cup of hot chocolate
she made for him and has it analyzed. He is shocked to discover
that it contains a dangerous amount of arsenic. )
「Ralph は 帰宅するとすぐに Sutton をクビにした。
荷物を纏めて Montgomery家を出て行く時に Suttonは (今まで ご主人さまには内緒にしてきましたが) 奥様は 浮気をしていますよ、と Ralph に 教えた。
そのことに Ralph は驚いたが、更に、逃亡中の連続殺人犯の女が逮捕されたことを知って 二度ビックリ仰天したのだ。
(Sutton は犯人なんかじゃなかったのだ)」
(He goes home and immediately fires Sutton.
As she leaves, she tells him his wife has been cheating on him.
Ralph is in for another shock when he discovers that the real
murderer has been arrested. )
「Ralph は 妻が ずっと Ralph を殺そうとしていたに違いない、ということに気が付いた。
(なにを そんなに 興奮なさっているの ? とでも言いたげに) ホット・ココアでも飲んで 気を落ち着けて頂戴と 言って 妻が ホット・ココアの入ったコップを Ralph に差し出した..............」
(He then realizes that it must have been his wife who was trying
to kill him, as she brings him a mug of hot chocolate to sooth
his nerves.................)
遅かりし由良之助、Sutton さんは 実は とても誠実で貴重な
ひとだったのだ、と やっと気が付いた Ralph でありました....
