お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"legacy" は
「遺言や取り決めによる動産の遺贈、又は
遺贈されたもの」
という意味で、よく似た英単に"heritage"(古く
から代々受け継いできたもの) があります。
極めて 大雑把に言えば、
"legacy" は お金に換えられるもの
"heritage"は そうでないもの
ということになります。
"legacy" は よく ”狙われ”ますね。
ヒッチコック劇場にも "legacy" 絡みのお話が
あります。
タイトルは そのものズバリ "The Legacy" で、
遺産狙いの話です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「著名な作家が パーム・ビーチ に やって来ている。
友人たちと旧交を温めている。
彼は友人たちに 次は Burhan王子についての著書
を出す積りだ、と話していた。王子は 名うての遊び人
で、夕刻 このビーチに到着予定だという。
このビーチには 富豪の Cole夫妻 (Howard と Irene)
も 逗留していた。
夫の Howard は ほとんどの時間を 若い女優たちを
相手にして過ごしていた。奥さんの Irene が 寛大
なことに 周囲のみんなが 困惑するほどだった。」
(A well-known author is visiting Palm Beach, and he meets
some old friends.
He tells them that he will be writing his next book about
Prince Burhan, a noted playboy from India, who will be arriving
that evening.
Also staying at the resort are wealthy Howard and Irene Cole.
Howard spends most of his time with a young actress, and the
others are baffled by Irene's tolerance. )
「ビーチで Irene は ふたりの男性と出会った：
Randolph Burnside と Burhan 王子である。
王子が あまり美人ともいえぬ Irene と ずっと一緒に
過ごし、自分は Irene に 恋してしまった、と周囲の者
に公言したことに みんな ビックリ仰天した。
やがて、 Burhan王子は わたしと結婚するために きみ
は夫君 Howard と別れてくれ、でないと わたしは自殺
する、と Irene に 迫った。
Irene は Howard と離婚することは 拒んだ。」
(There Irene meets two men: Randolph Burnside and Prince Burhan.
The Prince surprises everyone by spending all of his time with the
plain-looking Irene, and by insisting that he is in love with her.
Before long, Prince Burhan tells Irene that if she does not divorce
Howard in order to marry him, he will commit suicide
She refuses to divorce her husband.)
「ところが、王子が 突然、交通事故で亡くなった。
Irene と 彼女の夫は 王子が Irene への恋が果たせ
ないことを苦にして 自殺してたものと思い込んだ。
その後、Randolph は 王子が ひたすら Irene のお金を
目当てに Irene に付き纏っていたことを知った。
王子の車のブレーキが 修理工のミスで ペダルと繋がって
いなかったことも Randolph は知った。
Randolph は そうした事実を Irene に 伝えようとした。
が、Irene が 素行を改めて生まれ変わったようになった
ことが分かった。
いまや 夫の Howard は Irene を こよなく愛し、Irene の
言う通りに 従っている。
そんな状況を壊したくない Randolph は 王子が Irene の
遺産を狙って尻を追い回していただけだった、ということは
Irene に 伝えずにおこうと決めた...........................」
(But, suddenly, the Prince accidently kills himself in a car accident.
Irene and her husband assume that he killed himself over his love
for Irene.
Randolph then learns that the prince was after Irene for her money.
He also finds out that he died because his car's brakes were acci-
dently disconnected by a mechanic.
Randolph tries to tell the truth to Irene but discovers that she is a
changed woman.
Her husband now adores her and attends to her every need.
Deciding not to ruin things, he doesn't tell Irene about the Prince who
had pursued Irene only for her legacy....................)
