匿名で ＳＮＳ上に誹謗中傷記事を書き込み
物議をかもす人たちがいますが、約４５年前
の米国ｵﾊｲｵ州の小さな町 ｻｰｸﾙﾋﾞﾙで 特定
の住民を誹謗中傷する匿名の手紙が各戸に
届き、不可解な事故死も発生し、町は上や下
への大騒ぎとなりましたが その差出人を特定
できぬままこの事件は迷宮入りとなりました。
どんな事件だったのか、覗いてみましょう。
「1976年のこと、ｵﾊｲｵ州ｻｰｸﾙﾋﾞﾙの住民たちの
もとに誹謗中傷を内容とする手紙が舞い込み始め、
それ以来 手紙を巡って大混乱が生じた。
ｺﾛﾝﾊﾞｽの消印のある手紙は ｽｸｰﾙﾊﾞｽ運転手の
ﾒｱﾘｰ･ｶﾞﾚｽﾋﾟｰと校長との間の 不倫のウワサを
中心に取り上げた ﾌﾟﾗｲﾊﾞｼｰに立ち入った 告発
文書であった。
ﾒｱﾘｰの夫ﾛﾝのもとに届いた手紙には もし 妻の
不倫を止めさせなければ おまえ(夫) を殺すぞ、
ということが書かれていた。
1977年までに この夫は 銃弾を浴び 不可解な
単独自損事故で亡くなっている。」
( In 1976, residents of Circleville, Ohio, began receiving hate-
mail that has wreaked havoc ever since. The letters, post-
marked from Columbus, were invasive and accusatory, high-
lighting a supposed affair between school bus driver Mary
Gillespie, and the school superintendent. One letter addressed
to Mary’s husband Ron, threatened his life if he didn’t put
a stop to the affair. By 1977, the husband was dead, the
result of a suspicious one-car crash involving shots fired. )
「保安官は 夫の死を事故死であると判断したのだが、
住民たちのもとに 保安官は 事件を隠蔽していると
いう内容の手紙が届き始めた。
そういった内容の手紙は 1970年代から1980年代初め
まで住民たちのもとに ずっと届いた。
ﾛﾝ の 妹の夫 ﾎﾟｰﾙ･ﾌﾚｯｼｬｰ が 手紙の差出人であり
偽装を施した銃でﾒｱﾘｰを殺害しようとした、という容疑
をかけられた後も 手紙は続き、更に、ﾎﾟｰﾙ･ﾌﾚｯｼｬｰ
が刑務所に収監されていた間も ずっと 手紙は続いて
いたのである。
ﾎﾟｰﾙ･ﾌﾚｯｼｬｰ自身さえも 例の手紙を受け取っていた。
1994年に ﾎﾟｰﾙ･ﾌﾚｯｼｬｰ は 釈放され、2012年に
亡くなるまで 無実を訴え続けた。
こうした次第で 一体誰が 手紙の差出人であったのか
分かってはいない。
ﾎﾟｰﾙ･ﾌﾚｯｼｬｰ が 真犯人だった、という人もいる。
また、ﾒｱﾘｰ自身が真犯人で、彼女は 自分の夫を完全
犯罪で殺してしまおうと企て それをやり遂げたのだ、と
いう人もいる。」
( When the Sheriff ruled the death an accident, however, residents
began receiving letters accusing the Sheriff of a cover-up.
The letters continued throughout the 1970s and early 1980s,
and even after Ron’s sister’s husband, Paul Freshour, was
convicted of writing the letters and attempting to murder Mary
via a booby-trap-rigged pistol. Even with Freshour in prison,
however, the letters continued. He even received one himself.
In 1994, Freshour was released, and he maintained his innocence
until his death in 2012. The true identity of the Circleville Letter
Writer remains unknown. Some still believe it was Freshour.
Others believe it was Mary, herself, and that she used the letters
to concoct and support the perfect murder of her own husband. )
