"dumb blonde" は 「頭の弱い金髪女性」という
意味ですが、それでは 頭の良い金髪女性は ？
雌のゴールデン・レトリバーだ、というジョークがある
ようです。
では、初代の "dumb blonde" は 誰なのでしょう。
それは Rosalie Duthe (1748-1830) だ という
のが定説のようです。

ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Duthe は 元砲兵隊士官を父に持ち 1748年
ｳﾞｪﾙｻｲﾕ で 生まれた。
彼女は Catheine-Rosalie Gerard Duthe という
洗礼名であった。
パリのオペラ座で 踊り子や舞台女優として活躍
した。
とても美人で、金持ちのパトロンを多く抱え、サロン
も経営していた。サロンには 哲学者のﾃﾞｲﾃﾞﾛ や
詩人のｺﾗﾄﾞｰなどが集まった。
毎土曜日には いつも 豪華なデｲナーパーテｲーを
開いていた。また、乳白色の８頭の馬に引かせた
馬車を乗り回すことでも 世間に知られていた。
彼女の豪邸と馬車は 金張りであった、という風な
ことさえ言い伝えられている。」
(Duthé was born in Versailles in 1748 to a retired artillery
officer. She was christened Catherine-Rosalie Gerard Duthé
and became a ballet dancer and star at the Paris Opéra.
She was so beautiful, she acquired many wealthy patrons and
began to hold a salon that was attended by such men as the
French philosopher Denis Diderot and the French poet Charles-
Pierre Colardeau. On Saturdays, she always gave sumptuous
dinners, and she was well-known for taking a drive in her
carriage that was drawn by eight creamy white horses.
It was even said that “her splendid mansion, and her carriages
… were covered with gold. )
「Duthe は 頭脳明晰とは思われていなかったかも
知れぬが、政界に頭を突っ込むほどの勇気を持って
おり、手助けしてくれる人として 彼女は ｼｮﾜｿｰﾙ公爵
を頼り、彼に助言を頼んだり彼の影響力を利用した。
ｼｮﾜｿｰﾙ公爵は 外務大臣で、マリー・アントワネットと
若き時代のルイ14世との結婚を強く支持した人で
あった。
Duthe は ”公式な初代 Dumb Blonde" だと言われて
いる。
ﾌﾗﾝｽ革命勃発時、彼女は 英国へ移住しようと決めた。
そして、その英国で 彼女は 新たなパトロンを見つけた。
その中に リーという男がいたが、この男は自身では
Duthe をエスコートしたりせず、自分の弟に彼女の面倒
をみさせ 広場の散歩や観劇やその他の公的行事に
付き添わせた。」
(Although Rosalie Duthé may not have been perceived as bright,
she was brave enough to enter into politics. To aid her, she
sought the advice and influence of the Duke of Choiseul.
He was Minister of Foreign Affairs and had been a strong supporter
for the marriage between Marie Antoinette and the future Louis XVI.
She has been called "the first officially recorded dumb blonde" .
When the French Revolution broke out, Duthé decided to emigrate
to England. There she found new admirers including a man named
Mr. Lee, who would not escort her anywhere and instead had his
younger brother provide his arm and accompany her to promenades,
the theatre, or public events. )

彼女は もう若くはなかったが、かなり裕福であったので
シャンゼリゼのﾏｰﾍﾞﾌ通りに居を構えた。

というのも、その型や様子が なんとも時代遅れであった
からだ。
1830年9月25日に 彼女が亡くなった時、有名なその馬車
は 劇場用の大道具として売却された。」
(When the Bourbon Restoration occurred, Rosalie Duthé returned to
France. She was no longer young, but had a considerable fortune and
began to reside in the Rue Marboeuf, in the Champs Élysées.
Her famous gilt carriage was again seen in public, “but instead of
being admired, was much laughed at, as the style and shape were
quite out of fashion.” At her death on 25 September 1830, her
famous carriage was sold for theatrical performances. )
