"escape artist" は よく ご存知の職業です。
"escape" は ラテン語 "excappare" (ex- 外に、
cappare フードのあるコート[外套] cappa の
動詞派生語 ⇒ コートを脱ぐ) が "escaper" という
形で古フランス語に入り、これが "escapen"という
形で英語に入って変化、1300年頃に "escape"
が定着したようで、
「危険・捕縛・追跡・監視などから抜け出して
逃げる、脱出・逃亡する」
というのが原義です。
"escape artist " は、
「手錠・足枷抜けや水槽脱出などを見せる
脱出技を専門とするマジシャン・曲芸師」
を指します。
"escape artist" が登場する コミカル・ミステリー
があります。
ヒッチコック劇場の "The Last Escape" です。
最後の脱出技(わざ)、というのですが.........
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Joe Ferlini は いろんな ナイトクラブで 脱出技
を見せる曲芸師である。
拘束衣抜け を させれば 誰よりも早く抜け出すこと
ができる、と豪語しているが、もっと でっかい 派手
な華々しいことをしてやろうと考えている。
名を世の隅々に轟かせたい、というので 命懸けの
技をやることにした。
ところが、この頃 妻との関係が うまくいっていない
のだ。
彼の妻 Wanda は 浮気相手の Tommy と よく会って
いて、夫の そんな計画なんか どうでもよくて、夫とは
別の考えを持っていた。
Joe は 手錠をされて トラックに繋がれたまま川の中
へ沈められて そこから脱出するという 命懸けの水中
脱出技 を やろうとしていた。」
(Joe Ferlini is an escape artist who performs in nightclubs.
He claims to be the fastest at getting out of a straight jacket
but wants to make a bigger splash.
He decides to perform a dangerous escape in order to be
famous.
But his marital relationship with his wife is strained these days.
His wife Wanda who is seeing another man, her lover Tommy,
however, has other plans.
Joe plans a dangerous water escape to be handcuffed, locked
in a truck, and lowered into a river. )
「ところが、妻の Wanda は 手錠の鍵を 故意に他の
もの と すり替えていたせいで Joe は 溺れ死んだ。
葬儀の場で 警官が 棺桶を開けろ、と しつこく
迫った。
棺桶を開けて みんなが ビックリ仰天した。
なんと、棺桶は 空っぽだった。
妻の Wanda は 気が狂い、精神病院へ閉じ込められた。
後日、Joe の マネージャーが 次のことを 明かした。
万一、水中脱出技が失敗して死ぬような事になった場合
には、死体を 運び出して どこか 誰も分からぬ処に埋葬
する、ということを Joe と マネージャーが 申し合わせて
いた、と ； Joe は 前代未聞の最も偉大な脱出技 曲芸師
として 名を馳せたかったのだ。」
(Wanda, however, replaces Joe's key to the handcuffs with a
fake key, causing Joe to drown.
At the funeral, a policeman insists that the coffin be open.
When it is opened, everyone is shocked to discover that it is
empty.
Wanda goes insane and is locked up in an asylum.
Later Joe's manager reveals that he and Joe arranged to have
his body removed be buried somewhere secret if he were to
die while performing the river escape ： Joe wanted to be known
as the greatest escape artist of all time. )
