"oily" には
「口先のうまい」「口達者な」
「えらく人当りのよい」「やけに愛想のいい」
「へつらうような」「慇懃無礼な」「おもねるような」
などの意味があり、いずれも あまり好感を持てない
態度や人を形容するようですね。
溺死寸前 の 息子を助けた 行き掛かり の 若い男
に恩義を感じた両親が その男を自宅に招き入れて
泊めますが その ”口達者な" 男は 疫病神であった。
ﾋｯﾁｺｯｸ劇場の作品 "House Guest" (招待して泊めた
お客) です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「息子の Tony の命を救ってくれた Ray Roscoe と
いう無職のよそ者を Mitchell 夫妻 (John と Sally) は
自宅に招き入れて泊めることにした。
その "口達者な"英雄 Roscoe が 実は 女たらしの
タカリ屋であることが分かり、夫妻は とんだ間違いを
してしまった事に気付いた。
或る晩のこと、Roscoe が John の車を無断で乗り
出してキャンプ生活者の妻を はねてしまった。
怒り心頭に発した John は Roscoe を 地面に殴り
倒した。
キャンプ生活者が 飛び出してきて 倒れている Roscoe
の体を調べて Roscoe が 死んでいる、と言ったものだ
から、John は 腰を抜かさんばかりにビックリ仰天した。」
(John and Sally Mitchell offer an unemployed, stranger named Ray
Roscoe a place to stay after Roscoe saves the life of their son Tony.
When the "oily" young hero Roscoe turns out to be a womanizing
freeloader, they begin to believe that they made a terrible mistake.
One night Roscoe wrecks their car and hits on a camper's wife.
Angry John punches him and knocks him to the ground. John is shocked,
however, when the camper examines Roscoe's body and declares that
Roscoe is dead. )
「死体を森の奥に埋めてしまい、何もなかったことに
しよう、と キャンプ生活者は John に 言った。
同意したJohn は 死体の処理を キャンプ生活者に任せた。
後日、新しい自動車道建設のために 森が掘り返される
ことになったのを知った John は 不安になった。
森のどこに 死体を埋めたのか、確かな場所を知らぬ
Johnは キャンプ生活者を呼び 死体を どこか他の場所
に移さねばならない、と伝えた。
その通りだ、と キャンプ生活者は 言い、２万ドルを John
に要求した。
もし払わなければ 警察に行く、と 言って John を脅した。
John は 言われる通り 小切手を書いたのだが、その
小切手を キャンプ生活者に渡す前に 妻 Sally が
キャン生活者のトレーラーを見に行っていた。
そこで Sally は Roscoe が ピンピンしていることを
知った。
すべて 大芝居のサギだったのだ。
Sally は 警察に電話し、サギ師たちは逮捕されたので
あった。」
(The camper suggests that they bury the body in the woods and
forget the whole thing. John agrees and lets the camper deal with
the body. Later, John is disturbed to discover that the woods are
going to be excavated as a part of a new highway construction.
Since he doesn't know exactly where the body is, he calls the
camper and tells him that they must move the corpse. The camper
agrees, but demands $20,000. He tells John that he will go to the
police if he does not pay the money. John writes a check, but
before he can give it to the camper his wife Sally visits the
camper's trailer. She discovers that Roscoe is alive and that it
all a scam. She calls the police who arrest the con artists. )
