”短編の名手”、”近代演劇の完成者”などと言われ
ている チェーホフ、 「ワーニャ伯父さん」 「かもめ」
「三人姉妹」「桜の園」などの作品で日本にもたくさん
の ファン がいます。
２３歳の時からずっと結核に悩まされ続けた人でも
ありました。そのせいかどうか、独身生活が長かった
ようです。
なんと、チェーホフが 「生牡蛎」 に されてしまったと
いう お話が残っています。

「このロシアの小説家は 長い間 独身貴族の身分を
謳歌し楽しんでいた。女優の ｵﾙｶﾞ･ｸﾆｯﾊﾟｰ が彼と
結婚しいと願っていたし 彼も ｵﾙｶﾞ と 婚約していた
のに、だ。
なのに、彼は決心がつきかねていた。
というのは、1901年5月に かかりつけのｼｭﾛﾌｽｷｰ医師
が 彼の結核が非常に悪化しており もう 肺が両方ともに
重篤な状態になっている、と告げたからだ。
ﾛｼｱ南東部のｳﾌｧ郡に行って 雌馬の発酵乳を飲む療法
(クミス療法) を試してはどうかと奨められた。
独りだけで そんな所へ行くのは退屈だし、さりとて、こんな
体で オルガと結婚するのも 自己中過ぎる、と彼は思った。
だが、オルガの方は 治る見込みの薄い彼の体のことには
一切構わず、1901年5月25日、ふたりは結婚した。」
(The Russian novelist had long exulted in his bachelor state, though
he did have an understanding with Olga Knipper, an actress, who
wanted to marry him. He was still undecided when Dr. Shchurovsky
told him in May 1901 that his tuberculous condition had deteriorated
and that both lungs were now seriously affected. He was advised to
take the "koumiss cure " (the drinking of fermented mare's milk) in
the Ufa Province of southeastern Russia. To travel on his own would
be boring - to marry Olga would be selfish. But Olga was not deterred
by the authors's poor health prospects and the two were married on
25 May 1901. )
「1904年までに チェーホフの病気は重篤化し、モスクワの
アパートの部屋に籠りっきりになっていた。
もう手の施しようがない状態であったが、彼が最後にかかったドイツ人の医師は 療養のためにドイツへ行くことを奨めた。
で、彼は妻と一緒に 1904年5月31日、ﾄﾞｲﾂのﾊﾞｰﾃﾞﾝｳﾞｧｲﾗｰ
にある黒い森の温泉に向かった。
ｺｺｱ粥という少々”腹立たしい”献立に ブツクサと文句を
言いながらも 体の具合は よくなり始めた。
6月29日、心臓発作にみまわれたが、モルヒネ注射と
酸素吸入で 回復したようだった； が、次の夜、またも
心臓発作が起きた。
7月2日早朝に目を覚ました彼は 医者を呼んで欲しい、と
妻に頼んだ。
午前２時に医者がやって来て カンフル注射と酸素吸入を
施した。」
(By 1904 Chehov, who become extremely ill, was confined to his room
in their apartment in Moscow. His most recent physician, a German,
advised him to travel to Germany for a cure, though he was beyond
all help. He left with his wife for the Black Forest spa of Badenweiler,
Germany, on 31 May 1904, and though he grumbled about the "stupid"
diet of cocoa and porridge he began to feel much better. On 29 June
he had a heart attack but seemed to recover after an injection of
morphia and gulps of oxygen； the following night he had another attack.
He awoke early on 2 July and asked his wife to send for a docor.
At 2:00 A.M. the doctor arrived and administered camphor injections
and whiffs of oxygen. )
「その医者は また、一杯のシャンペンも 処方した。
シャンペンが入ったグラスを手にしたチェーホフは 妻に
微笑みかけ、”随分と長い間 シャンペンは 口にして
いないね” と言い、それを飲み干し 左側を下にして
静かに横たわった。
が、午前３時までに 彼は 息絶えていた。
彼の遺体を収めた棺は 鉄道貨車でサンクトペテルスブルグ
へと輸送された。
その貨車には ”生牡蛎”（ナマガキ) と 標識付けされていた。
彼の遺体は ﾉｳﾞｫﾃﾞｲｳﾞｨｷ墓地に埋葬された。」
(The doctor also prescribed a glass of champagne.
Chekhov took the champagn, smiled at his wife, remarked that he "hadn't
drunk chanpagn for ages," drained the glass and calmly turned on his
left side. By 3:00 A.M. he was dead. His coffin was delivered to St.
Petersburg in a railway wagon labeled "FRESH OYSTERS".
He was burried in Novodyevichy Cemetary. )
