「シェーン、カムバック !! 」 と 少年が叫びかける
ラスト・シーン が とても 印象的な映画 "Shane"
(1953年) は いまや クラシックとなりました。
Alan Ladd (1913-1964) 主演のこの映画で Joey と
いう少年を演じたのは Brandon deWilde (1942-1972)
で 当時 11歳でした。

子役の その後は どうなったのでしょうか。

「芸能一家に生まれた彼は ９歳で "The Member
of the Wedding" に出演、華々しいブロードウエイ・
舞台デビューを果たした。
Donaldoson賞を受賞した 初めての子役で、1952年
の映画化版でも同じ役を務め た。
映画 ”シェーン” (1953年) で Alan Ladd が扮する
よそ者のガンマンを敬慕する金髪碧眼の Joey 役を
演じて人気を独り占めし、この役で アカデミー賞に
ノミネートされたのである。」

(Born into a theatrical family, he made a much-acclaimed
Broadway debut a "The Member of the Wedding," when he
was 9 years old. He was the first child actor to win the
Donaldson Award, and went on to repeat his role in the film
version (1952). As the blond-haired, blue-eyed Joey who
idolizes the strange gunman (played by Alan Ladd) in the
film Shane (1953), he stole the picture, and received an
Oscar nomination for his work in it. )

テレビ番組 "Jamie" で活躍し、1960年代には ”All
Fall Down”(1962年)で弟役を、大物の Paul Newman
が主役の "Hud"(1963年)で 甥役を演じ、映画界
でも 期待の青年として名を揚げた。
彼は 成人の俳優としてのキャリアを積もうとして
頑張っていた矢先に、悲劇的な結末を迎えた。
手術を受けて間もない妻を見舞おうとして 彼は 妻が
入院中の病院にキャンピングーカーで向かっていたが、
停車しているトラックに激突し 亡くなったのである。
僅か３０歳であった。
彼は ２度結婚していて 息子が ひとり いた。
最初の妻は 1963年に結婚した 作家の Susan M. Maw
で、彼女との間に 息子の Jesse がいた。
彼女とは 1969年に離婚している。
二人目の妻は Janice Gero で、 1972年4月に結婚した。
彼が亡くなる ３ケ月前のことであった。」
(During 1953-54, Brandon starred in his own television series
Jamie (1953), and made his mark as a screen adolescent
during the 1960s, playing a younger brother in All Fall Down
(1962) and nephew in Hud (1963) starring Paul Newman .
Brandon managed to keep his career building, into early adult-
hood, when his career was tragically ended. While en route
to visit his wife at a hospital where she had recently under-
gone surgery, he was killed in an accident as the camper van
he was driving struck a parked truck. He was only 30 years old.
DeWilde was married twice and had one son. His first marriage
was to writer Susan M. Maw, whom he married in 1963.
The couple had a son, Jesse, before divorcing in 1969.
He married Janice Gero in April 1972, three months before his
death. )
