"body" には
「生ける屍(しかばね) 、抜け殻となった体」
という意味があります。
"soul, spirit, mind" などが "body" と一体になって
初めて「生ける人」となりますが、"soul, spirit, mind"
がなければ "body" は ただの「抜け殻」に過ぎません。
そんな状態で息をしなくなると "body" は「死体」という
意味に変わります。
ヒッチコック劇場 に "John Brown's Body" というタイトルの作品があります。
タイトルの "body" は 「抜け殻となった体」という意味
です。
どんな お話なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「John Brown の会社は 家具製造をしており、長年
堅実な経営を行ってきている。
ところが、若い役員の Harold Skinner は 経営方針
を変えて 現代風の家具を製造したいと思っている。
社長の John Brown は そんな気は ひとつもない。
やがて、Harold は John の妻と知り合う。
彼女は 30代の綺麗な女性である。John とは 財産が
目的で結婚したのだ。-- 尤も、彼女は 否定しているが。
夫のJohn とは違い、彼女は Harold の 現代風な発想に
心躍らせ Harold を 支援しようと思った。
特に ふたりが 恋人同士になってからは。
Harold は John を 会社から排除する "えげつない"名案
を思い付いた： 認知症が始まっている、と John 自身に
思わせる、という手だ。
とうとう 妻 Vera と Harold によって John は 治療施設
へ送り込まれてしまった。
Vera と Harold は John の古臭いデザインが 会社をダメ
にしているのだ、と思い込んでいる。」
(John Brown's Company makes furniture and has been a solid
business for years. But young partner Harold Skinner wants to
shake things up and make modern furniture. John Brown will have
none of it. Soon Harold meets John Brown's wife, an attractive
woman in her 30s, who married for money -- though she denies it.
Unlike her husband, she's excited about Skinner's modern ideas
and wants to help him.
Especially after the two of them become lovers.
Harold comes up with a "wonderful horrible idea" to get John Brown
out of the way: convince him he's losing his mind.
John Brown is committed to an institution by his wife Vera and
Harold. Both believe that John's furniture designs are destroying his
business. )
「二人の企ては うまくいった。
が、John が 会社を切り盛りするようになってから 会社
は 傾き始めた。
で、ふたりは (もう一度 John に 経営を任せようとして )
John を 治療施設から 出させようと決めた。
ふたりが施設に行くと、John は ニコニコと明るく笑い、
元の仕事と結婚生活に戻ろうとしているように見えた。
John の 身の回り品が すべて 荷造りされ、医師が 退院
届けに署名するよう John に 書類を渡した。
いつも使っている椅子に座り、 John は 書類に署名した。
署名を確認した医師は Vera と Harold に John を まだ
退院させるわけにはゆかない、と伝えた。
John は 自分の名を "George Washington" と 書類に
書いたのであった。
医師は Vera に こう言った：
” 奥さん、抜け殻となってしまった彼の体だけを 連れて
帰る事になりますよ。 彼の精神は...(異常をきたしています) ”
John は こうして 精神に異常をきたしていることを 医師に
思い込ませたのである。
John Brown は 本当に 精神異常をきたしたのでしょうか。
彼は ただ ゲームを楽しんでいるだけで、施設での余裕の
ある生活が 気に入っているかのようにも見えます。
彼は きっと ずっと正気で、妻と 若い役員が 恋人同士に
なって 会社 を 破滅 の ドン底へ向かわせていることなど
知ったことか、と思っているようでもあります..........」
(Their plot works, but after John is committed the business begins to
lose money. The two decide to get John back from the institution.
John smiles broadly, seeming ready to rejoin the world of business and
marriage, and his things have all been packed up when the doctor
gives him a paper to sign before he can leave. He sits at his desk and
signs, but when the doctor reviews his signature he tells Vera and
Harold that John is not ready to go.
John has signed his name as "George Washington" on the paper and
the doctor tells his wife ：
"You'd only be taking his body. His mind is .........."
John manages to convince the doctors he is insane.
Is John Brown really crazy?
It may be that he is playing a game and that he likes his life of leisure
at the institution.
He is as sane as ever and does not seem to care that his wife and his
junior partner are lovers who are running his business into the ground.....)
John が正気であるとしたら 見事な反撃・仕返しです......
