アメリカ を代表する名優 ハンフリー・ボガートは
酒豪であり ヘビースモーカーでもあったそうです。
晩年は食道癌で闘病し、25歳年下の ４回目の妻
ﾛｰﾚﾝ･ﾊﾞｺｰﾙ (Lauren Bacall) との間にできた
２児 (1949年生れで 8歳の息子、1952年生れで 5歳
の娘）を残し、1957年に 58歳で この世を去りました。

「米国の映画俳優 ボガートの舌もつれのある話し方
は1918年に海軍にいた頃に 収容所へ護送していた
捕虜のせいだとされている。
手錠をかけられていたその男は ボストンで いきなり
ボガートに殴りかかり 上唇を裂くほどの傷を負わせた
からである。
ボガートは 何年にも亘って 空咳をしていたが、1956年
初めの頃には “喉が弱い” という風な言い訳だけでは
済まなくなっていた。空咳の上に、食べ物が喉を通らなく
なり 体重が減り、ｵﾚﾝｼﾞ･ｼﾞｭｰｽ を飲むと 喉が 焼け付く
ように痛むようになったのだ。
女優で歌手の ｶﾞｰｿﾝ が 彼を説き伏せて 彼女の主治医
の処へ行かせた。すると、悪性の筋肉組織が発見され、
直ちに ﾛｻﾝｼﾞｪﾙｽﾞのｸﾞｯﾄﾞ･ｻﾏﾘﾀﾝ病院での手術が手配
された。
3月1日、9時間半に亙る手術で 医師たちは 病巣のある
食道部分を切除し 僅かに残った食道に繋ぐために 胃の
位置を変えた。」
(The U.S. movie actor owed his lisp to a prisoner he was escorting
to detention while in the Navy in 1918. In Boston the handcuffed
man smashed him across the face, almost tearing off his upper lip.
For years Bogart had had a dry cough , but by early 1956 his excuse
of a "sensitive throat " was no longer convincing. Besides, he was
off his food and underweight, and his throat burned when he drank
orange juice. After Greer Garson persuaded him to see her doctor,
malignant tissue was detected and an immdediate operation was
scheduled at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles. On 1 March
in a nine-and-a-half-hour procedure the doctor removed the dis-
eased portion of the esophagus and repositioned the stomach so
that it could be attched to the remaining gullet. )
「暫くの間は 気分が良かったのだが、術後の X線照射
による治療のせいで 酷い吐き気を催し 体重がなかなか
増えてゆかなかった。
11月に入って ボガートは ｻﾝﾀﾓﾆｶの聖ｼﾞｮﾝ病院に５日間
ほど入院したが、これは 術痕による神経の圧迫を正常に
戻すためだ、とマスコミには伝えられた。
実は 癌の転移を防ぐために ﾅｲﾄﾛｼﾞｪﾝﾏｽﾀｰﾄﾞが投与され
ていたのだ。が、これは効果がなかった。
その後、ボガートは ﾛｻﾝｼﾞｪﾙｽ の自宅を出ることはなかった。」
(For a time Bogart felt better, but follow-up x-ray therapy nauseated
him and he failed to gain weight. Late in November he spent five days
at St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica, for what reporters were told
was correction of pressure on a nerve caused by scar tissue.
Nitrogen mustard was administered in a vain attempt to check the
spreading cancer. After that, the actor never left his home in Los
Angeles. )
「ボガートの妻 Betty (ﾊﾞｺｰﾙの愛称) は 彼の死の床の
2, 3 週間の様子を 自伝で 生々しく 述べている。
死ぬ２日前まで 彼は 小型ｴﾚﾍﾞｰﾀｰに取り付けた椅子
に座って ２階から降りて来て 友人たちに交じり ﾄﾞﾗｲｼｪﾘｰ
で作った ﾏｰﾁｰﾆ を飲んで楽しんでいた。
友人たちの中には 殆ど 骨 と 皮 だけ に なってしまった
"ﾎﾞｷﾞｰ”（ﾎﾞｶﾞｰﾄの愛称) を目のあたりにして 耐えられなく
なった者もいる。
震える手で 電気カミソリを当てながら ボガートが 最後に
妻に言ったことばは ”さよなら、キッド (妻の愛称)。 早く
帰っておいで (子供たちよ) ” であった、という。
2, 3 分後に 妻が ｻﾝﾃﾞｰ･ｽｸｰﾙ に行っていた子供たちを
連れ戻したのだが、彼は 深い眠りに落ち、意識を失って
いった。
夜半過ぎに 寝室の傍に設けた小さな休眠室でひと休みを
するようにと 看護師たちが ボガートの妻に 勧めた。
1957年1月14日月曜日午前２時１０分に看護師たちは 妻を
起こし、”ちょうど 今しがた ボガートさんが お亡くなりに
なりました” と 告げた。
最期の時、ボガートの心臓は激しく鼓動し 体温が急上昇し
昏睡状態を脱することはなかった、という。」
(In her autobiography, Bogart's widow Betty has recorded in graphic
detail the story of his final weeks. Until the last two days he came
downstairs - in a chair wedged inside a dumbwaiter - to join friends
and enjoy a martini made with dry sherry. To some of his visiors the
sight of "Bogie" , reduced almost to skin and bone, was more than
they could bear. Bogart's last words to his wife, as he dabbed shakily
at his chin with an electric shaver were, "Goodbye Kid. Hurry back."
When she returned a few minutes later, after collecting their two
children from Sunday School, he was in a deep sleep that turned into
unconsciousness. After midnight the nurses suggested she rest in the
little "nap-room" next to their bedroom. They awoke her at 2:10 A.M.,
Monday, 14 January 1957, with the news that "Mr. Bogart has just
died. " In the final minutes his pulse raced and his temperature shot
up, he never regained consciousness. )
