"goods"(複数形) は 「財貨」 という意味があり、
"stolen goods"(盗まれたもの) ということばの
後半の "goods" だけで、
「盗品」、 「犯罪の証拠」
という意味で使われます。
・He was caught with the goods.
（彼は 現行犯で 逮捕された。）
・We get the goods on him.
(我々は 彼の犯行の確証を握っている。)
いまや 大成功を遂げた 学生時代の旧友の会社に
身を窶(やつ)して入り込んだ 男、その目的は ?
犯罪の確証を掴む (get the goods) ことであった。
ヒッチコック劇場の "Most Likely to Succeed" と
いうタイトルの作品です。
一番出世するだろうと 学生時代に誰もが思って
いた人、という意味のタイトルですが..........
どんな話か、ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Dave Summer は 大学時代 優秀な学生で、クラスの
総長を務め、誰もがみんな 彼は 大出世するであろう
と思っていた。
ところが、今日の彼は どうも 貧乏生活を送っている
様子で、不運続きであったようだ。
彼は卒業以来 もう ２０年も 会って いない 大学の旧友
Stanley Towers のもとに立ち寄った。
Stanley は ３２歳までに 百万長者になっていた。
凄くいい生活をし、裕福であったが、どうも胡散臭い
実業家であった。
Dave の様子を見かねた Stanley は Dave に 雑用夫
としての仕事を与えてやった。
それは Stanley 邸の 雑事をこなし、パーティーがあれば
飲み物を参加者に配ったりすることなどであった。」
(Dave Sumner was supreme in his college class, being the president
of his classand, and was voted most likely to succeed.
Nowadays, however, he is a seemingly poor man and has had a run
of bad luck.
Dave drops in on his old college friend Stanley Towers, whom he
hasn't seen for 20 years.
Stanley made his first million by age 32 and is very well off and a
rich but a shady businessman.
As a favor, Stanley offers Dave a servant's job.
It is a job doing different tasks around the house, serving drinks at
parties and so on. )
「Stanley の妻も (Dave と同じように) 幸せではなかった。
彼女は Dave に、 夫は 仕事気違いで やっちゃいけない
ことに手を染めている、と打ち明けた。
邸宅の私的費用を会社の経費として付け回したり、支払い
給料の額を水増しするために親戚一同を給与支払い対象
リストに載せたりしている、という。
Dave は その邸宅に居る間に Stanley が 脱税をしている
ことを 既に 掴んでいた。 それを止めさせるべきだと Dave
は考えていた。
国税庁が Stanley の事業について 調査をしていた。
Stanley は 妻と親しそうにしている Dave を 妬んで
クビにしてしまった。 が、Dave は 実は そんな男では
なかったことが 明らかになる。
国税庁からの呼び出しで出席した会議において、Stanley
は Dave が 実は 財務省の覆面調査員であったことを
知り ビックリ仰天した。
Dave が 運に見放された落伍者、という風な振りをしていた
のは Stanley の 脱税行為の確証を掴む ためであった。」
(Mrs. Towers is also unhappy and confides in Dave that her husband
is a workaholic and is involved in unethical deals like charging work
on the house to the company and putting relatives on the payroll
at inflated salaries.
There Dave had already found Stanley makes unlawful tax deals
which should be stopped.
Stanley's business is being investigated by the government.
Stanley eventually fires Dave in a jealous rage but it turns out
Dave is not quite who he seems to be.
At a meeting with the IRS, however, Stanley is shocked to discover
that Dave is really an undercover Treasury Department agent.
He only pretended to be down on his luck so he could get the goods
on Stanley's shady business dealings. )
