"gold digger" は金鉱探しや砂金堀りを意味しますが、
「財産目当てに男 (女) を誘惑・交際・結婚する 女 (男)」
[玉の輿を狙う女]
[逆玉を狙う男]
という意味で、「玉の輿」、「逆玉」 の どちらをも指します。
ﾋｯﾁｺｯｸ劇場に"逆玉の男" を描いた作品があります。
"Behind the Locked Door" というタイトルです。
鍵の掛かったドアの向こうには 財宝が隠されている
ものと信じた男、何が 待っていたのでしょうか........
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Dave Snowden は お金持ちの娘 Bonnie Daniels を
誑[たぶら]かして駆け落ちし、Bonnie の亡き父親が
所有していて 彼女が ６歳まで 住んでいたが 今は
空き家となった 邸宅 へふたりして忍び込んだ。
その邸宅の中で Dave は 鍵の掛かったドアを見つけ、
その向こうの部屋の中には きっと 高価な財宝が隠さ
れているのだろうと 思い込んだ。
Dave が 二階で わけのありそうな 鍵の掛かったドアを
懸命に開けようとしている処を Bonnie の母親が 見て
いた。
後日、Dave と Bonnie は 結婚する積りであることを
年老いた Bonnie の母親に伝えた。
Dave が 娘の財産を目当てにしているのだ、と Bonnie
の母親は 確信した。
で、母親は 手切れ金で Dave に結婚を諦めさせようと
した。
Dave は 言下に断った； お金が欲しくてたまらないのだ。」
(Dave Snowden elopes with wealthy Bonnie Daniels and they
sneakinto the abandoned estate of Bonnie's late father, where
Bonnie lived until age six. In the estate, Dave finds a locked
door and comes to believe that there is something valuable
inside. Bonnie's mother, Mrs. Daniels, finds Dave struggling
to open a mysterious locked door on the upper floor.
Later, Dave and Bonnie tell Bonnie's elderly mother that
they are to be married. Bonnie's mother is convinced that
Dave is after her daughter inheritance. She tries to bribe
Dave to annull the marriage.
Dave refuses ; he is desperate for money. )
「自分は善良な男で悪意はないという処を Bonnie の
母親に見せて信じさせようとした Dave は、Bonnie に
催眠剤を飲み過剰摂取による自殺を図ったような振り
をするよう説得した。
そんな Bonnie を 懸命に介護する Dave の様子を
母親に見せつけて Dave に対する母親の気持ち を
変えさせよう と企んだのだ。
ところが、運悪く、Bonnie は 催眠剤アレルギーで
死んでしまった。
娘 Bonnie の葬儀の後、母親は 気が変わったことを
Dave に伝えた。
その証左として 空き家となっている邸宅を Dave に
与えた。
Dave は 邸宅に急ぎ、あの鍵の掛かったドアの向こう側
には一体何があるのだろうか、と また 不思議に思った。
Bonnie とは 金だけのために一緒になったんだ、と Dave
は独り言を言っていたのだが、これを 偶々、Bonnie の母親
が 密かに聞いていた。
母親が現れて、Dave に 例のドアの鍵を 渡してやった。
Dave は そのドアを開け、急いで駆け込んだ。
そして、真っ逆さまに 落ちて 死んでしまった。
鍵の掛かった向こう側の部屋は 未完成 の まま 放置されて
いたエレベーター用の垂直空間だったのだ。」
(In an effort to convince Bonnie's mother of his good intentions,
he convinces Bonnie to fake a suicide attempt by overdosing
on sleeping pills. Dave hopes that Mrs. Daniels will see him
caring for her and change her mind about him. Unfortunately,
Bonnie is allergic to sleeping pills and accidently dies.
After the funeral, Mrs. Daniels tells Dave that she has had a
change of heart.
She gives him the abandoned estate as an apparent gesture of
goodwill. Dave heads to the estate and again wonders what is
behind the locked door. As he talks to himself, Dave accidently
reveals to a secretly listening Mrs. Daniels that he did marry
Bonnie for money. Mrs. Daniels approaches Dave and gives
him the key to the locked door.
He opens it and hurries in where he falls to his death.
The room was actually an unfinished elevator shaft.)
