あまり聞きなれない ”バレンチノ症候群” ですが
これは イタリア出身 の 美男子俳優 Rudolph
Valentino (1895-1926) に由来するようです。
虫垂炎に似た症状を呈し 虫垂炎と誤診される
ことがあるそうですが、十二指腸の穿孔性潰瘍
が原因で重度の突発性腹痛を惹き起こし 合併症
で死に至ることもある、とされます。
典型的なこの症状で これからと嘱望されていた
若き美男子俳優 Rudolph Valentino が ３１歳の
若さで亡くなってしまいました。

彼の最期の様子は 次のようであったそうです。
「イタリア生まれで アイドル的なこの俳優は 1926年
8月14日に 友人の ﾆｭｰﾖｰｸにあるマンションで 気分
が悪くなり その翌日に総合病院へ担ぎ込まれた。
16日に 虫垂炎破裂と穿孔性胃潰瘍で手術を受けた。
何千人という熱狂的な女性ファンからの電報やら花束
やらが よどみなく寄せられ、Valentino は 数日間は
順調に回復をみせた。
ところが、21日に また 体温が上昇し始め, 左部に胸膜炎
が発生した兆候が 明らかになった。
8月23日日曜日午前８時、彼は昏睡状態に陥った。
そして、正午１０分過ぎに 息を引き取った。」
(The Italian-born screen idol was taken ill in a friend’s New
York apartment on 14 August 1926 and the following day and
was admitted to Polyclinic Hospital. On the 16th he was operated
on for a ruptured appendix and perforated gastric ulcer.
As telegrams and flowers flowed in from thousands of star-struck
women, Valentino made a normal recovery for several days.
On the 21st, however, his temperature began to rise again and
signs of pleurisy were evident on the left side. He slipped into
a coma at 8:00 A.M. on Sunday, 23 August, and died at ten minutes
after noon. )
「彼の本名 Rudolfo Guglielmi で届け出された死亡
診断書によれば、死因は主に 胃潰瘍破裂と通常の
腹膜炎で、敗血性肺炎及び敗血性心内膜炎を併発
していた、と記されている。
１０万人もの人々がﾏﾝﾊｯﾀﾝのｶﾝﾍﾞﾙ葬儀院の金堂
で公開された棺の前を列をなして進んだ。
ﾋﾞﾊﾞﾘｰﾋﾙｽﾞで行われた葬儀の後、多額の借金を残して
亡くなった Valentino の棺は 恩師で脚本家の June
Mathis の 先祖代々の地下墓室に安置された。
これは 取り敢えずの処置であったのだが、建設予定
であった広大壮麗な墓堂は 遂に建てられることはなく
こんにち現在も 彼の棺は Mathis 家の 地下墓室に
鎮座している。」
(The death certificate, made out in his real name Rudolfo Guglielmi,
listed ruptured gastric ulcer and general peritonitis as major causes,
with septic pneumonia and septic endocarditis as contributing factors.
One hundred thousand people filed past the open casket in the Gold
Room at Campbell's funeral chapel in Manhattan. After a funeral
service in Bevery Hills, Valentino, who had died deeply in debt, was
placed in the family crypt of his mentor, screen writer June Mathis,
in Hollywood Cemetery. Though this arrangement wss intended to be
temporary, the planned mausoleum has never been built and his remains
lie there still. )
