"toilet" は フランス語 "toilette"(小さい布、ナプキン、それらが備えられた化粧台) が英語に入ったもので、 "toilet" という語は 文献上 1540年に初見されているそうです。
さて、潜水艦に設置された新型トイレのせいで その潜水艦が
自沈してしまった、という事件がありました。
第二次大戦中のドイツ軍潜水艦のお話です。
ご存知の方がおいでになるかも知れませんが、椿事なのでちょっと ご紹介しましょう。
「艦隊の他の潜水艦と違って U-1206号潜水艦には 新型の高圧ポンプ式トイレが備えられ、標準型トイレよりもずっと深い海中で 汚物を吐出できるものであった。
しかし、この新型トイレには 操作上の難点があった。
このトイレには 微に入り細に入りの複雑な使用ﾏﾆｭｱﾙがあり、艦員の中から選ばれた数人が 訓練を受けた上で このトイレを 流すこと の できるスペシャリストとして トイレを扱うのである。」
(Unlike many subs in the fleet, U-1206 had new high-pressure
toilets that could be used at greater depths than the standard
heads could. But the new system was very difficult to
operate. The toilets came with complicated instructions
manuals, and a few members of the crew had to be trained
so that they could serve a toilet-flushing “specialists.” )
「U-1206号潜水艦は スコットランドの 8マイル沖を 深度200フィートで潜航していた。
艦長の Karl Adolf Schlitt は この潜水艦を指揮するのは初めてであった。
用便を済ませた Schlitt は わざわざスペシャリストを呼んで
トイレを流すのは止めにして、自分で流そうとした。
だが、なにか うまくゆかない。 で、スペシャリストを呼んだ。
しかし、この時もうまくゆかない。
スペシャリストが 内側のバルブが開いたままなのに海中に向かって吐出するためにあるバルブを開けたものだから一気に
大量の海水が 艦内に 流れ込んできた。」
(The sub was cruising at a depth of 200 feet, some eight miles
off the coast of Scotland. Rather than request the assistance
of the toilet specialist, Captain Karl Adolf Schlitt (who was
commanding a sub for the first time) tried to follow the instructions
in the manual to flush the toilet himself. Something went wrong -
and when Schlitt asked the toilet specialist for help, something
went wrong again. The specialist opened the outside valve -
the one that opened to the sea- while the inside valve was open,
causing a torrent of water to flood into the sub. )
「このせいで U-1206号潜水艦の設計上のミスが もうひとつ
露呈してしまった。
潜水艦が潜航を始めると 電気で動くように設計されているのだが、その電源である大型蓄電池が 具合が悪くなったトイレの
真下の室に収納されていたのだ。
浸水してきた海水は すぐに 蓄電池の酸材とミックスして 猛毒の塩素ガスを発生させ、艦内に充満し始めた。」
(It was then that another flaw in the U-1206's design became apparent.
When the submarine is submerged, it runs on electric motors powered
by a giant bank of batteries. And the U-1206's batteries were in a
compartment directly below the malfunctioning toilet.
The seawater quickly combined with battery acid and created deadly
chlorine gas, which began to spread throughout the sub. )
堪らなくなって浮上した処を連合軍に発見され、数名の犠牲は
出たものの艦員の殆どが捕虜となり、U-1206号は 爆発し 自沈したようです。
因みに、"toilet water" (化粧水) は 俗語で 「生ビール」
のこと をいうようですが、これは すぐに トイレに 行きたく
なってしまう、ということから生まれたそうですね。
