円盤型蓄音機が普及し始めた頃に オペラ歌手
として初めて とても さかんに 多くの録音をした
人物がいます。
エンリコ・カルーソー (Enrico Caruso) という歌手
ですが、惜しくも 働き盛りの４８歳で この世を去り
ました。

その最期の様子が伝えられています。
初期症状の段階での誤診や不衛生な器具での
処置が 如何に怖ろしい結果を招くか、思い識ら
されます。
「疲れ果て ひどい風邪をひいていたにも拘わらず
イタリアの この偉大な ﾃﾉｰﾙ歌手は "ﾕﾀﾞﾔの女"
の Eleazar 役を演じる為に、1920年11月15日、
ﾒﾄﾛﾎﾟﾘﾀﾝ･ｵﾍﾟﾗ･ﾊｳｽでの公演を開いた。
胸部の痛みが どんどんと激しくなっていたのだ
が、彼のかかりつけ医は 肋間神経炎であろう
と 誤診していた。
12月11日、ﾌﾞﾙｯｸﾘﾝ音楽院で ”愛の妙薬“ を
歌っている時に 口から 酷い出血をした。
かかりつけ医は ”舌先の静脈裂傷” と診断した。
ｸﾘｽﾏｽ･ｲｳﾞに Caruso は ﾒﾄﾛﾎﾟﾘﾀﾝ･ｵﾍﾟﾗ･ﾊｳｽ
で"ﾕﾀﾞﾔの女" を 公演した。
これが 彼の最後の公演となった。」
(In spite of being very tired and suffering from a heavy
cold, the great Italian tenor opened the Metropolitan
Opera season on 15 November 1920 as Eleazar in La
Juive. His increasingly severer chest pains were incor-
rectly diagnosed by his physician as intercostal neuritis.
On 11 December, while singing in L'Elisir d'Amore at the
Brooklyn Academy of Music, he bled badly from the mouth.
His doctor briskly diagnosed "a small burst vein at the
tip of the tongue". He appeared in La Juive on Crist-
mas Eve at the Metropolitan Opera House, the last time
he was ever to sing in public. )
「1920年のクリスマスの日、彼は激痛にみまわ
れた。
散々 手を尽くしてやっとのことで 医者の Evan
Evans博士を掴まえた。
博士は Caruso が 急性胸膜炎に罹っていると
診断、それが 気管支肺炎へと悪化しつつある、
と述べた。
３日後、胸膜腔から 4ﾘｯﾄﾙ(1ｶﾞﾛﾝ) ほどの水を
吸出した。
この後、彼は徐々に回復したのだが、1921年2月
になって急に 40度(華氏104度) もの高熱を出した。
2月12日、再手術が行われた。
胸膜から沁み出した悪性リンパ液で出来た 深い
場所にある膿瘍を切取ってしまわねばならなかった。
この手術を なるべく手早く行う為 肋骨を10cm(4ｲﾝﾁ)
切除しなければならなかった。」
(On Christmas Day 1920 he wa in agonizing pain.
A physician, Dr. Evan Evans, was found with difficulty.
He discovered a condition of acute pleurisy which was
developing into bronchial pneumonia. Three days later a
gallon of fluid was drawn from the pleural cavity. Caruso
began to improve slowly thereafter but early in Februay
1921 his temperature abruptly rose to 104 degrees. On 12
February he was operated on again. Deep abscesses, caused
by poisonous seepage from the pleura, had to be drained;
to fascilitate this a four-inch section of rib was cut away. )
「5月になって Caruso は 妻 Dorothy と 娘 Gloria
を連れて ｲﾀﾘｱのｿﾚﾝﾄへ旅した。そこでの休養と
燦燦と輝く太陽の光のお蔭で 体を持ち直した。
が、母親のかかりつけ医であった 老医師に Caruso
は自分の手術跡を見せたのだが、この時 老医師は
消毒もしていない不衛生な器具を使った。
この後、彼の体温が急激に上がり、医師たちは
腎臓をどうしても 切除せねばならぬであろうと
言った。
彼の激痛が収まらぬので 医療設備の整ったローマ
へ彼を移そうということにした。
7月31日、ナポリで 彼と家族は一夜を過ごしたが
激痛は収まらなかった。
彼の妻は 老医師が不衛生な器具を差し入れた
膿瘍を診てくれるよう 医師たちに懇願したが 医師
たちは耳を貸さなかった。」
(In May Caruso traveled with his wife, Dorothy, and their baby,
Gloria, to Sorrento, Italy, where rest and sunshine worked
their miracle. But he allowed the elderly doctor who had at-
tended his mother to probe the old incision with a dirty
instrument. His temperature shot up and his doctors insisted
a kidney would have to be removed. Because of Caruso's severe
pain they decied to leave for Rome. On Sunday 31 July in
Naples, where he and his family stayed overnight, he was in
great pain again. His wife begged doctors to probe for as abscess
where the old doctor had introduced the dirty instrument, but
they refuse. )
「Caruso は 1921年8月2日ちょうど午前９時前、ｳﾞｪｽ-
ｳﾞｲｵ・ホテルで息を引き取った。
Caruso の妻が 医師たちに診てくれるようにと懇願して
いたまさしく その膿瘍が破裂したことによる腹膜炎 が
死因 であった。
彼の遺体を収めた透明の棺は ﾅﾎﾟﾘの丘の上にある
ﾃﾞﾙ･ﾌﾟﾗﾝﾄ墓地の葬儀施設の部屋に安置された。
友人のﾃﾉｰﾙ歌手 Tito Schipa や 他の友人達が 防腐
保蔵処置を施した彼の遺体に 毎年 新しい衣服を着せ
替えていたのだが、1927年、Caruso の未亡人は 夫の
遺体が いつまでも公衆の目に晒され続けるのは耐え
難いとして、棺の上を白の御影石の蓋で覆い 葬儀施設
の部屋に鍵を取り付けた。」
(He died just before 9:00 A.M. on 2 August 1921 at the Hotel Vesuvio.
The cause of death was peritonitis due to the bursting of an abscess
at the place Mrs. Caruso had indicated. Caruso's crystal casket
was placed in a chapel in the Del Planto cemetary above Naples.
His fellow tenor, Tito Schipa, and other friends arranged for the em-
balmed body to be dressed up in new clothes every year, but in 1927
the widow objected to the long public display of her husband's body.
She had a slab of white granite placed over the casket and the
mausoleum was locked up. )
