という意味で、"useless" や "worthless" と同義語
です。
頼りとすべき夫、身の危機という肝心の時に 役立たず
だったら、妻は.........!!??
ヒッチコック劇場作品 "Lonely Place"(うらさびれた処)
に そんな 役立たずの夫が登場します。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Stella は モモ作り農家をしている小心者の夫 Emery
に たっぷりの朝ごはんを出している。そんな時、窓の
網戸の前に リスが現れた。
彼女は やさしく撫でてやり 餌と水を与えた。
ふと 自宅の近くの舗装していない泥道を 下って行く
ひとりの放浪者を目にした。
これから まだ たくさんモモを摘まなきゃならん、この
谷の村じゃ 日に６ドルの賃金が相場じゃが、あの浮浪者
なら 日に５ドルで働かせることができるかも知れん、と
Emery は 口にした。
で、Emery は その浮浪者を家に入れ、日に３ドルの日当
と賄い付き、それに 裏の納屋を自由に使っていいが、どう
かね、と 訊ねた。」
(Stella is serving her cowardly peach farmer husband Emery
a big breakfast when a squirrel appears on the front window
screen. She fondles the rodent and gives it food and water,
then spots a tramp walking down the public dirt road near
their home.
Emery says that he has plenty of peaches to pick, and the
going wage in the valley is $6 per day, but he might get this
tramp to work for $5/day.
Emery invites the tramp inside, and offers him three dollars
a day plus board and a place in the back yard. )
「その浮浪者は 姓も中間名もなく ただ単に Jesse という
名で呼ばれているだけだ、と言い 雇われることになった。
Jesse は 出された朝飯を ガツガツと貪り食い、トマトや
パンを (自前の)大きなナイフを使って切った。
Stella は その大きいナイフを しまいなさい、と Jesse に
言った。
外にいる あの肥えたリスは ペットなのか、と Jessee は
Stella に尋ねた。 そうよ、と Stella は 応えた。
晩飯のシチューにするなら 屠(ほふ)ってやるよ、と Jesse
は言った。
数分後、裏庭で Jesse が 声を立てて笑っているので
Stella が 外に飛び出て見ると ペットのリスが 死んで
横たわっていた。 Stella は ビックリ仰天して叫び声を
上げた。」
(The tramp, who says his name is Jesse with no middle or last
name, hires on. Jesse gobbles down his breakfast, using a big
knife to slice a tomato and some bread. Stella asks him to put
the knife away. Jesse asks Stella whether the fat squirrel out-
side is a pet. She says that it is.
He replies that he could kill it so she could make stew for supper.
A few minutes later, she hears Jesse's laughter in the yard, rushes
outside to find her pet squirrel lying dead, and screams. )
「Jesse の奇行と自前のナイフへの執着心に Stella は
恐怖心を抱き始めた。
ところが 夫の Emery は 妻が Jesse が怖いと言っても
信じようとしなかった。
とうとう Stella は この うらさびれた村から 逃げ出そうと
した。が、Jesse に捕まってしまった。
Jesse は 刺殺すぞ、と Stella を 脅した。
Stella は 彼と揉み合い なんとか 撃退した。
彼は そのまま 逃げ去った。
Stella は トラックに飛び乗り 運転して 家へと急いだ。
家で寝ていた 夫の Emery を起こし、 Jesse のことを
話した。
なんと、Emery は Stella の叫び声を聞いてはいたが、
あまりにも怖くて 身がすくんでしまった、と明かした。
怒り心頭に発した Stella は 夫を 刺し殺した。
その後 警察を呼び、夫は 逃亡した Jesse という男に
殺された、と言って 罪を Jesse に被せた。」
(Jesse's strange behavior and fascination with a knife he carries
begins to frightens her.
Emery, however, refuses to believe her.
Stella finally tries to run away from this lonely place, but is caught
by Jesse. He threatens to stab her.
She manages to fight him off. He runs away.
She escapes in her husbands truck and heads home.
There she awaken Emery and tells him about Jesse.
Emery, however, confesses that he heard her screams, but was
too afraid to do anything.
Stella angrily stabs her husband and kills him.
She then calls the police and blames the murder on the fleeing
Jesse. )
