"morning after" は 「二日酔い」 という意味のほか、
「過去の過ちが身にしみる時」
という意味でも使われますが、「二日酔い」から自ずと
派生した意味であることが納得できますね。
ヒッチコック劇場に "Morning After" というタイトルの
作品があります。
どんな内容のお話なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「妻のあるﾋﾞｼﾞﾈｽﾏﾝ Ben Nelson は 若いうぶな娘
Sharon Trotter を アパートに囲っている。
強欲で たちの悪い 女房と別れたら すぐに 結婚を
しよう、と言って 高い贈り物などをして Sharon を
信じさせている。
だが、Sharon の母親は そう簡単に 信じはしない。
自分の娘が 妻のある男と恋仲になっていることに
心痛めた母親は その男の勤め先に乗り込んだ。
娘さんと結婚する為に 女房と別れる算段をずっとして
いる、と 母親は その男から もう一年ほどずっと 同じ
言い訳を聞かされてきた。
会社役員のその中年男は 相変わらず 今までの話を
繰り返すだけであった。
が、曲がった事が嫌いな母親を これ以上 同じ話で説得
し続けるのは無理であった。
母親は 行動に出た。」
(A married businessman Ben Nelson keeps his naive young mistress
Sharon Trotter in an apartment, assuring her with costly gifts that
he will marry her as soon as he can secure a divorce from his harpy
wife. The young woman's mother is not so easily persuaded.
A mother, distraught about her daughter's affair with a married
businessman, confronts him in his office.
She has been told for a year that he's working on gaining his freedom
from his wife so he can marry the young woman.
The middle-aged executive won't waver from his story, but can't
persuade the righteous mother to stop interfering. )
「母親は Ben の妻に 自分の娘と旦那の関係を教えた。
Ben の妻は ちょうど 離婚をしようとしていたのだ。
その晩、Ben は 妻を殺した。
アリバイが必要な Ben は Sharon に電話をかけ、妻が
殺された晩 ずっと Ben は Sharon と一緒にいた と警察
に証言して欲しい と話した。
生憎、その電話には Sharon の振りをして 母親が出ていた
のであった。
Ben を 刑務所送りにしようと 母親は、 Ben の妻が殺された
晩に Ben は おまえといっしょには いなかった と 警察に
証言して欲しい、と Ben から電話があった、と わざと ウソ
を 話したのであった。」
(She tells Ben's wife who then tries to get a divorce. That night Ben
kills his wife.
Needing an alibi he calls Sharon and tells her that she should tell the
police that he was with her on the night of the murder.
Unfortunately, Sharon's mother answers the phone pretending to be
Sharon. So that Ben will go to jail, she deliberately tells her daughter
that Ben wants her to tell the police that he was not with her on the
night of the his wife's murder. )
