"take it in stride" は、
「(障害などを) 冷静に乗り越える」
という意味です。
"stride" は 「大股で歩く(こと) 」という意味ですが、
比喩的に 「いつもの調子」という意味もあり、"take
it in stride" は 平常の調子を乱さずに対応する、と
いうのが原義です。
少女が 自分の身の上に関する重要な秘密を明かさ
れますが これを 冷静に受け止め 乗り越えてゆきます。
"Night of the Owl" (フクロウの夜) というタイトルの
ヒッチコック劇場作品のお話です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「森林警備員 の Jim Mallory は 妻 Linda と 相談し
Anne という名の女の子を 養女にした。
ふたりは Anne の両親が 身の毛もよだつ殺人と自殺
で亡くなったということは、Anne を困らせるだけだから
決して 教えないでいた。
Anne の生い立ちは悲劇的だった ； 実の父親は 母親
を殺し その後 自殺したのである。
崇敬すべき Mallory 夫妻は まるで絵のように美しく平和
なアパラチア山脈の牧歌的な環境で Anne を育てること
に 喜びを感じていた。
Jim は 万一 Anne の 実の両親のことが 世間に知れる
ようなことがあったら どんな犠牲を払っても 嘲罵や陰口
から Anne を守ってやろうと思っていた。」
(Jim Mallory is a forest ranger who along with his wife Linda,
have adopted a girl named Anne. The couple have never told
Anne that her parents died in a bizarre murder-suicide for
fear that the news might disturb her.
Anne comes from a tragic background ； her biological father
killed her mother and then himself.
The adoring couple love raising their daughter in the idyllic
environment of the picturesque and peaceful Appalachian
mountains. The husband wants to shield his daughter at any
cost from taunts and gossip should the history of her birth
parents become public knowledge.)
「恐喝者 (元刑務所内牧師とその共犯者) が Jim に会いに
来て 金を要求した。
元牧師は もし Jim が 金を払わなければ Anne に 実の両親
の秘密をバラすぞ、と言って脅した。
Jim は 仕方なく応じた。 が、これを警察に通報した。
何かおかしいぞ、と気付いた恐喝者たちは 金の受け渡し場所
を変更してきた。
その内に 恐喝者たちが仲たがいし、共犯者が元牧師に殺された。
死体が発見された時、警察は Jim Mallory を容疑者とみた。
Jim は どうにかして 元牧師を捕まえることができ、容疑を
晴らすことができた。
だが、その時には もう 元牧師が Anne に実の両親の秘密を
明かしてしまっていた。
実の両親の秘密を明かされた Anne は 心が搔き乱された。
が、冷静さを取り戻し 苦しい状況を乗り越えた。
ふたりのことを大好きで愛しているし ずっと いつも 本当の
両親だと思ってきたわ、と Anne は Mallory夫妻に言った。」
(Blackmailers, a former prison chaplain and his accomplice,
contact Jim and demands money. The former prison chaplain
says that he will tell Anne the secret of her past if Jim doesn't
pay up. Jim agrees to pay, but informs the police.
The blackmailers figure out that something is up and change the
site of the money drop. Later the blackmailers get into an argument
and one of them is killed. When the police find the body, they
suspect Jim Mallory. Jim manages to catch the blackmailer to clear
his name, but he doesn't get to him in time to stop him from telling
Anne the secret about her parents.
Anne is troubled by the news, but manages to take it in stride.
She tells the Mallorys that she loves them and has always considered
them her real parents.)
