"get even with ～ " は
「～(ﾋﾄ) に仕返しをする」
という意味ですね。
・ I'll get even with him for insulting remarks
on me.
（オレに侮辱的な言動をしたから アイツに仕返し
してやるぞ。)
恋人をサーファーたちに殺されたのは あの女の
せいだ、と思い込んだ男が その女のもとへ 仕返し
に行くが.........
"Forecast ： Low Clouds and Coastal Fog " (天気
予報 ：雲が垂れ込め沿岸は霧が出るでしょう) という
長ったらしいタイトルの ヒッチコック劇場作品の お話
です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「かなり年上の夫と結婚した 新婚早々の綺麗な若妻は
夫が商用で出かけて 浜辺に建つ家に ひとりぼっちで
残されて 退屈していた。
或る晩のこと、夫が乗った飛行機が 低く垂れこめた雲と
沿岸の霧発生という悪天候のせいで 着陸できず 帰宅
できなかった。
そんな時、Manuel Sanchez という男が 助けて欲しい、と
言って ドンドンと玄関のドアを叩き続けたので 妻の Karen
Wilson は怯[おび] え切った。
その男は 車のガソリンが切れ、 一番近い ｶﾞｿﾘﾝｽﾀﾝﾄﾞに
電話したいので 電話を使わして貰いたい、と言うのだ。
不安な Karen は その男を家に入れなかった。
このため、その男は ｶﾞｿﾘﾝｽﾀﾝﾄﾞ まで 歩いて行かねば
ならなかった。
少し後になって、Karen は 叫び声を聞いた。
Sanchez が ｶﾞｿﾘﾝｽﾀﾝﾄﾞ に歩いて行っている間、車の中で
待っていた 彼の恋人が 襲われて暴行され殺された、という
ことを Karen は 警察から聞いた。
隣の家に住んでいる作家の Simon Carter が 犯人では
ないか、と Karen は怪しんだ。」
(A beautiful young newlywed is wary of her much-older husband's
business trip leaving her alone in their beach house.
One night when her husband is away, his plane being grounded due
to poor weather conditions,--low clouds and coastal fog, Karen
Wilson is frightened when a man named Manuel Sanchez comes
pounding on her door asking for help.
He claims to be out of gas and wants to use her phone to call the
nearest filling station.
Uncomfortable with the man, Karen refuses to let him in and he
must walk to a gas station.
Later Karen hears a scream.
She is told by the police that Sanchez's girlfriend who was waiting
in the car was brutally beaten and murdered while he was walking
to the gas station.
Karen suspects a neighboring writer named Simon Carter. )
「Simon というのは テレビ放送作家で、酒が好きで、Karen
の処へ 時々やって来ては 友人以上の感情を Karen に
示すような男である。
次の晩、Simon が Karen の処へ やって来た。
でも、サーフィンに連れて行ってくれたりして友達付き合い
している男友達３人が やって来たので その場が救われた。
ところが、(話している内に) その３人が Sanchez の 恋人
を殺したことが分かり Karen は ビックリ仰天した。
３人は Karen と Simon を 部屋に閉じ込め どうして口封じ
を しようかと相談し始めたのだが、やって来た Sanchez に
ふたりは 助けられた。
Sanchez は 自分の恋人を殺された原因を作った Karen に
仕返ししようとして Karen の処へやって来たのだが、皮肉
にも 彼女の命を救うことになったわけである。」
(Simon is a television writer who likes to drink, drops by, and shows
a more than friendly interest in Karen.
The next evening Simon comes to Karen's home.
She is rescued by her three surfing friends who provide her some
company by taking her surfing.
Karen, however, is shocked to discover that her three friends are
in fact the murderer's of Sanchez's girlfriend.
They have her and Simon trapped, but two are rescued by Sanchez.
He was coming to her to get even with her for contributing to the death
of his girlfriend, but he manages to save her life instead.)
タイトルは、こんな "悪天候"でなかったら 夫が帰宅していて
別の展開になっていたのではないか、ということを示唆して
いるのでしょうか..........
