"amnesia" は ギリシャ語 "amnestia"(忘却) を
語源とする "amnesty"(過去の罪を忘れること ⇒
恩赦・大赦) と同根の英単で、
「記憶喪失、健忘症」
という意味です。
ヒッチコック劇場に 記憶喪失 の 男 を 描いた作品
"The Black Curtain" があります。
記憶が 黒いカーテン(black curtain) の 向こうに
消えてしまう、という記憶喪失........
どんな お話なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「自分が経営するドラッグストアの店先で 強盗に
遭い、頭を殴られ Phil Townsend は 記憶喪失
になった。
彼は 意識を失ったのだが、気がついた時、３年前
に起きた出来事 の 記憶だけ が 蘇ってきた。
思い出した事といえば これから結婚式場に行こうと
していることだけだった。
今、自分が 偽名を使っていて、殺人犯として手配を
されている、ということは 都合よく 忘却 の 彼方に
去っていた。
時計は午前１時をさしているが、Phil Townsend は
Virginia という名のフィアンセとの結婚式に向かって
いる、と思い込んでいる。
地元の新聞の一面に 彼の手配顔写真が Dave Webber
という名で デカデカと掲載されている。
Dave Webber は 暗黒街 の 悪徳弁護士の 見るからに
戦士然とした ボディーガードである、と報じられている。
バワリー街で 絡まれていた Phil を 助けた 情け深い
タクシー運転手が Phil を乗せて フィアンセが住んで
いる新しい住所へと向かった。
フィアンセ Virginia は 赤ちゃんを抱いて 玄関口へ
出てきた。
彼女が 既に結婚していて、もう３年も 結婚生活をして
いることを Phil は 知った。」
(Getting conked on the head outside his drugstore
during a mugging causes Phil Townsend to suffer
amnesia.
He lose consciousness and, when he awakens he reverts
to his memory of events 3 years earlier.
All he remembers is that he is about to get married.
He conveniently forgets that he's currently wanted for
murder under an assumed identity.
It's 1 AM, but Phil Townsend believes he's en route to
his wedding to a fiancée named Virginia.
His mug bursts from the front page of the local news-
paper as Dave Webber, dressed-to-kill bodyguard for
a gangland mouthpiece.
The compassionate taxi driver who rescued Phil from
the Bowery alley, drives him to Phil's fiancée's new
address, where Virginia answers the door clutching her
newborn. He discovers that she is already married and
has been married for three years.)
「Virginia は 今 逃亡犯となっている 元婚約者が
突然目の前に現れたことに仰天し、口うるさい夫に
こんな処を見られた とんでもないことになる、と
不安になった。
３年前、優しくて頼り甲斐のある Phil が 結婚式に
出てこなかったので、彼女は 私立探偵を雇って
彼の行方を探したのだが 駄目だった。
今 刑事と結婚している、ということを Virginia から
聞いたPhil は ゾッとした。
自分が David Webber という名で この３年間 暮ら
してきたことを Phil は あとになって 知った。
Webber は かつて 金持ちの刑事専門弁護士のボディー
ガードであり、その弁護士の妻を殺した容疑がかかって
いることを Phil は 知った。
どうやら Phil は 結婚式に向かう途中で 襲われ、弁護士
の妻殺し の 濡れ衣 を 着せられた ようなのだ。
だが、Phil は 苦労の末 遂に 罪を晴らすことができた。」
(She's terrified that her former lover, now a fugitive, is
there and fears that her abusive husband will assume
the worst. When gentle, reliable Phil didn't show for
the ceremony 3 years earlier, the distraught young
woman hired a PI to find him to no avail.
Phil is horrified when Virginia tells him she's now
married to the gumshoe. Later, Townsend discovers
that he has been living under the name David Webber
for three years. He discovers that Webber was once
the bodyguard of a rich criminal attorney and is suspected
of murdering the attorney's wife. En route the wedding
he seems to have been conked and framed for the murder.
But Townsend eventually manages to clear his name. )
