"paranoid" は ギリシャ語 "paranoia"(para-
異常 + nous 知性 + -ia 病名語尾 ⇒ 妄 想 症 )
が英語に入り、"-oid"(に似た) 語尾がついたもの
で、
「根拠の無い過度の猜疑心・不安・恐怖心」
という意味で使われます。
自分勝手な妄想に基づく猜疑心を持った人ほど
怖いものはありません。
やはり 事件が起きました。
ヒッチコック劇場 "Off Season" (オフシーズン)
というタイトルの作品です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Johnny Kendall は やたらとピストルを撃ちた
がる 警官で、けしからぬことに 銃も持っていない
酔っ払いを撃ち殺し、すぐにカッとなる性格とすぐ
に引き金を引きたがる性癖の故に 署をクビになった。
この元警官は、小っちゃな町にある 夏季 の 別荘が
オフシーズンの期間、空き家になるので その管理を
する事務所の銃不所持の保安係としての仕事を見つ
けた。
彼の恋人 Sandy は ウエイトレス の 仕事 に 就き、
ふたりで なんとか 生活ができるようにした。
仕事中に、 Johnny は 前任の Milt という男が
どこの誰とも分からぬ女を誘惑して 空いている
別荘に入り込んで 性交渉を持ったことで クビに
なったのを知った。
この Milt という男は 後任となった Johnny を
嫌い、Johnny の 恋人 Sandy に 興味を示し
始めた。」
(Johnny Kendall is a trigger-happy cop who is fired from
the force due to an excessive display of anger and an itchy
trigger finger after shamelessly killing an unarmed wino.
The ex-cop gets a job as an unarmed deputy in the office
checking vacant summer homes during the offseason in a
small town.
His girlfriend Sandy gets a job as a waitress to make ends
meet. At work, Johnny discovers that the previous deputy
Milt was fired from the job for fooling around and having an
affair with an unidentified woman in one of the vacant
summer homes.
Milt expresses a dislike for Johnny and begins showing an
interest in Sandy.)
「その Milt が Johnny の恋人 Sandy と 楽しそう
に ぶらついているのを見た Johnny は 嫉妬に燃え、
メラメラと猜疑心が募ってきた。
或る晩のこと、Milt と Sandy が 一緒にいるに違い
ない、と思い込んだ Johnny は 銃を手にして ふたり
の居所を 探し始めた。
空いている別荘に向かい、そのひとつに どうやら 人が
侵入した形跡を見つけた。
その中に忍び込んだ Johnny は Milt の声がするのを
聞いた。女と一緒のようだった。
Johnny は まだ 凶暴性というものが消えていなかった。
暗闇の中で Johnny は ふたりを 撃ち殺した。
電燈をつけて よく見ると 女は Sandy ではなく、Milt
の妻であった。」
(When Johnny sees the ex-deputy hanging around Sandy,
he grows jealous and paranoid.
One night, when he believes the two are together, he takes
his gun and looks for them. He heads for the empty summer
houses and finds one broken into.
Inside he hears the former deputy and a woman.
He still has some very violent tendencies.
He shoots them both in the dark and kills them.
He turns on the lights and discovers that the woman was
not Sandy, but the ex-deputy's wife.)
