"trigger" は 「銃砲の引き金(を引く) 」という
意味ですが、比喩的に、
「～のキッカケになる、～を誘発する」
という意味でも よく 使われます。

（暴動の原因は 何なのだ？)
PTSD を患っている 元兵士 が、 自分に 銃口を
向けられる と それが キッカケ に なり 極度 の
興奮状態 に 陥り 凶行 に 及ぶ、という筋 の 話
が あります。
ヒッチコック劇場の "Self Defense"(正当防衛)
というタイトルの作品です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「 Gerald Clark は PTSD を患っている元兵士
である。
彼は 自分に銃口を向けられると 極度に恐怖を感じ
銃口を向けた者は 誰であっても 殺さなければ 気が
済まないのだ。
或る日、友人宅でトランプをするために行く途中で
酒屋に寄ったが、偶々 そこを襲った強盗の行く手
を遮った。が、強盗の少年が逃げたので 彼は その
後を 追った。
ところが、その不良少年が 彼の背中に銃を突きつけ
たので 彼は 極度な恐怖を感じた。
が、正気を取り戻し、酒屋の主人の銃を手にして
その少年を撃った。
少年の背後から ４発の銃弾を撃ち込んだのだ。」
(Gerald Clark is a former soldier with PTSD.
He is incredibly terrified of guns being pointed at him,
and feels he must destroy anyone who would do that to
him. He interrupts a robbery when he stops at a liquor
store while en route to a friends house to play cards.
The boy runs and he follows.
He's quite terrified when the young hoodlum pokes the
gun in his back but recovers and shoots the robber with
the liquor store owner's gun.
He shoots the boy four times in the back.)
「あとになって、強盗した少年の銃には銃弾は装填
されていなかったことを 彼は知った。
彼は 少年の葬式代の一部を負担し 償おうとした。
当局は 少年殺害は 彼の正当防衛だったとして 無罪
放免した。
警察は 彼を 無罪 と したのだが、その少年 の 母親
Philips 婦人は なぜ ４発もの銃弾を続けざまに撃ち
込んだのか、そのわけ を 教えて欲しい、と 言って
銃を持って Gerald に 立ちはだかった。
とても怖かったんだ、と Gerald は 答えた。
睨み合いが終わり、Philips 婦人は 銃をしまった。
彼女は 背を向け 立ち去ろうとした。
ところが、さきほど 彼女が持っていた銃に恐怖を
感じていた Gerald は 恐怖が収まらず、去って
行く彼女の背後から 幾度も 銃弾を撃ち込んだ。
オレに銃を向けるなと あれだけ言ったろう、と
彼は 彼女の死体に向かって 叫んだ。」
(He subsequently learns that that the robber's gun wasn't
loaded and tries to make amends for what he has done
by paying part of the boy's funeral. They rule the killing
an act of self defense and release Gerald. Although Gerald
is exonerated by the police, the boy's mother, Mrs. Philips,
confronts Gerald with a gun, demanding to know why he
made four killing shots in a row.
He explains that he was frightened.
After a stand-off, Mrs. Philips puts the gun away.
The woman turns and begins to leave.
But Gerald is triggered by her gun and shoots her repeatedly.
He screams "I told you not to pull that gun on me" to the
woman's dead corpse.)
昨今の 米国における警官の黒人射殺事件は 人種差別
の観点から追及されていますが、このドラマのような
病理的な原因も あり得るのではないかとも思います。
