"gloat" は 通常 悪い意味で、
「自分の成功 又は、他人の不幸・失敗をみて
満足げに・得意そうに ひとり悦に入る」
という意味で、あまり快い気がしない英単です。
・ He gloated over my bad luck.
（あいつは 俺の不運を 小気味よさげに見ていた）
ヒッチコック劇場に "The Gloating Place" (ひとり
ほくそ笑む場所) というタイトルの作品があります。
どんな お話なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「友達もいなくて 不満ばかり抱いている高校生の
Susan Harper は 池の近くで 覆面をした男に襲わ
れた、とウソをつき、覆面男が暴漢だと騒ぎ立てて
みんなの関心を買い 自分を身の丈以上に目立たせ
ようとした。
それは功を奏し、新聞各社が 彼女の話に すっかり
騙され、彼女は 喉から手が出るほどに欲しかった
名声というものを得た。
話を どんどん大きくしてゆくことに望外の喜びを Susan
は味わった。
やがて 新聞社が この話に興味を持たなくなり、忘れ
去られ、町のみんなの関心が 次の新しいニュースに
移り始めた頃、 Susan は 再び 脚光を浴びようとして
次の手を企て始めた。」
(Lonely, unhappy high school student Susan Harper fakes an
assault by a masked man near a pond and blames it on a
masked attacker in order to get attention and to make herself
more important than she is. She is successful and the news-
papers fall for her story and give her the celebrity status she
craves. Susan is more than happy to oblige with an ever ex-
panding tale. After the press seem to be losing interest and
the news dies down, the community moving on to the next big
news, she starts scheming to regain the spotlight. )
「Susan は 校内で最も人気のある女生徒をおびき出し
暴漢が初めて現れたと喧伝した場所に連れて行き、
まるで 覆面男がやったかのように装い彼女を絞殺した。
新聞各社は この殺人事件を報じ、以前の Susan の
事件を みんなに思い出させることとなり、 Susan は
再び 脚光を浴びた。
Susan は また 注目の的になったことを 喜んだ。
彼女は 事件現場の池に行き、自分の利口さと名声に
心酔し ひとり 悦に入っていた。
ところが、本当に覆面をした男が現れ、Susan を絞殺した。
彼女の言動が 覆面男の模倣犯を生んでしまったのだ。」
(She lures the school's most popular girl to the spot where the
alleged first attack occurred and strangles her to make it seem
as though the "masked man" is responsible. The newspapers
report the murder and recall the incident with Susan and she
once again is in the spotlight. Susan is pleased to be relevant
again. Susan returns to the pond to gloat over her cleverness
and celebrity.
But a genuine masked killer appears and strangles her.
Her actions have inspired the copycat masked man. )
