"prank call" は 「いたずら」(prank)」「電話(call)」
ですが、もう少し お堅めに、
「 虚 偽 通 報 」
とも訳します。
航空荷物に爆弾が仕掛けられている、などといった
電話は ”いたずら” の積りでも 「虚偽通報」 と して
威力業務妨害 (forcible obstruction of business)
に問われます。
ヒッチコック劇場に "Profit-Sharing Plan" という
タイトルの作品があります。
盗んだお金を 夫婦で山分けしよう、という計画だった
のに 思わぬことになってしまいます..........
それは 妻から航空会社への "prank call" .................
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「勤続20年、退社の日、Miles Cheever は 勤務先の
事務所で ささやかな 退職パーティーを催して貰った。
上司が 退職記念として 質素な ペン・鉛筆セットを
Miles に贈った。
帰宅すると、彼の妻は 勤続20年にしては しみったれて
いるわね、あなたは もっと 値打ちがあったんじゃないの
と言った。
で、妻と相談し 会社の金庫から お金を盗み出すことに
した。
その晩、Miles は 会社の金庫からお金を盗み出した。
妻は どうやら 気付いていないようだが、Miles は この
お金を持って 愛人と一緒に高飛びしようと企んでおり、
打合せ通り 愛人が待っている空港へ向かった。」
(On Miles Cheever's last day of work after 20 years of service,
he is given a little retirement party at the office. The boss gives
him his going away present, a plain pen and pencil set.
When he comes home, his wife tells him that he deserved more
for twenty years. He plots with his wife to steal money from
company's vault.
That night he goes to office and robs the safe. But apparently
unknown her, he is planning to flee with his mistress and heads
to the airport where she is waiting for him. )
「ところが、搭乗した Miles に CA が スーツケースを
後部の荷物室に入れるようにと 指導した。
そのスーツケースには 盗んだお金を詰め込んでいるの
だが Miles は しぶしぶと CA の指導に従った。
暫し後、座席で出発 を 待っている 時 に、この機内に
爆発物が仕掛けられているという通報があったのを
知った。
警察が乗り込んできて 荷物検査を始めたので Miles は
金庫破りがバレて 捕まるのではないかと ヒヤヒヤして
いた。
Miles は 夢にも知らなかったことだが、実は 彼の妻が
爆発物の通報をしたのであった。
彼女は ずっと 夫の浮気を知っており、彼が 捕まってしまう
ように仕組んだのだ。」
(A stewardess, however, tells Miles to put his suitcase in a rear
storage compartment. Though the suitcase contains the money
from the office, Miles reluctantly agrees.
Later as he waits on the plane, he learns that a bomb threat has
been called in.
Since the police are searching the bags, he worries that he will
be caught.
What he doesn't realize is that his wife called in the bomb threat.
She knew he was having an affair and called the threat in so he'd
get caught. )
