"obnoxious boor" は、
"obnoxious" ： 鼻持ちならない、不快な態度の
"boor" ： 無作法者、田舎者
ということから、少々下品ですが、
「胸糞が悪くなる イナカもん」
？？？？？？？
とでも訳せましょうか。
ところで、「巧言令色鮮し仁」(ｺｳｹﾞﾝﾚｲｼｮｸｽｸﾅｼｼﾞﾝ)
という諺は、口先のうまいお調子者は 誠実な心が
乏しく徳を備えていないことが多い、という譬えだと
されていますが、 上記 の "obnoxious boor" の方
は どうなのでしょうか。
ヒッチコック劇場に "Act of Faith"(誠実な行い) と
いうタイトルの作品があり、その辺を描いています。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Alan Chatterton は 芽が出ないで苦しんでいる作家
である。
彼は 自分の作品についての意見を貰おうと 売れている
作家 Ralston Temple に 手紙と執筆中の作品の抜粋文
３か所を送った。
Temple の秘書 Alice は 抜粋文を見る限り よく出来て
いると思うので 彼に会ってみて 執筆中の作品を完成
させるため金銭的な援助でも してあげたら いかがでしょう、
と Templeに進言した。
では Chatterton に会ってみよう、と Temple は 応じた。
Temple は 彼を 自分のマンションに招待した。
その席で Chartterton は 著作を仕上げるために 週40ドル
を ６か月間 融資して欲しい、と 申し込んだ。
月日が経ったが、融資額が増えてゆくだけで、Temple の
目の前に Chatterton の作品は とんと 出来てこない。
あいつは ただの 胸糞悪いイナカもん に過ぎなかったんだ、
とTemple は 気付いた。」
(Alan Chatterton, an unsuccessful, struggling writer, sends successful
author Ralston Temple a letter along with three sample chapters from
his novel in progress, asking him for comments on these chapters.
Alice, Temple's secretary, convinces her boss that the chapters are
good and that he should meet the writer and perhaps give him money
to finish his book.
Temple agrees to meet Chatterton.
Temple invites him to his apartment and Chatterton asks him for a loan
of $40 per week for six months to allow him to finish his novel.
Over time, the loans grow larger and Temple has yet to see anything of
the novel.
Temple finds him an obnoxious boor. )
「作品が 相変わらず完成もしていないのに Temple は
ずっと Chatterton に 融資を続けた。
或る日 Chatterton が やって来て、結婚するから １千ドル
都合して欲しい、と言った。
不承不承 Temple は 応じてやった。
暫し後、或る晩、高級レストランで 友人たちを もてなして
いる Chatterton の姿を Temple は 目撃した。
聞く処によれば 彼は このレストランの常連だという。
あいつに 一杯食わされた、と Temple は 思った。
で、Temple は Chatterton に会い、金輪際 関係 を 絶つ
ことを伝えた。
そうして Temple は旅に出た。
これが 少々 せっかちだったことを Temple は 後になって
から気が付くことになる。
暫し後、秘書の Alice から Temple に Chatterton が
ついに著作を完成させた、という知らせが入った。
それは ベストセラーになり、映画化もされることになって
いるという。
Chatterton が サイン会をしている店に Temple が 現れた。
Temple が 驚いたことに、Chatterton は サイン入りの本を
Templeに贈呈した上、Temple から 融資して貰った お金に
利子をつけて返したのであった。」
(Nevertheless Temple continues to fund Chatterton even though the book
is not yet completed. Chatterton shows up again and asks for a thousand
dollars so he can get married. Temple gives into the request, but later at
an expensive restaurant one evening, Temple sees Chatterton entertaining
a group of friends and learns that he is a regular patron.
Thinking he has been swindled, Temple confronts Chatterton and rips up
their contract.
He then goes on vacation.
Only later does he realize that he may have been hasty.
Later, Alice tells Temple that Chatterton has finished his book.
It is a best-seller and is going to be made into a movie.
Temple shows up at a store where Chatterton is autographing his book.
To Temple's surprise, Chatterton gives him an autographed copy of his book
plus all the money he owed him with interest.)
Chatterton が 大物だったのか 単に運に恵まれただけなのか
わたくしには分かりませんが、情けは人の為ならず、といわれる
通り、人によくしてあげる のはいいことに間違いありませんね。
