"jaywalk" の "jay" は ラテン語の人名 "Gaius"
からきたといわれますが 鳥の「カケス」のことです。

どういうわけか、"jay" は 口語で、
「単純で騙されやすい人、トンマ、マヌケ」
「田舎臭い人、武骨者」
「新米、未熟者」
という意味で使われます。
で、"jaywalk" は ひょうきんにジグザグ歩くカケス
の姿と 田舎者の姿の連想からか、
「横断歩道以外の所を渡る」
「信号を無視して道路を横切る」
という意味になったようです。
"jaywalk" した為に 警官と揉めて 結局 逮捕され、
留置所入りとなった男、実は..............
ヒッチコック劇場の "Incident in a Small Jail" と
いうタイトルの作品です。
小さな町の小さな留置所で起きた椿事、というの
ですが どんな話なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Leon Grorwa;d は 行商で各地を回っているのだ
が、ガソリンを入れるために 或る小さな町に車を
停めた。
車を降りて ちょっと用を足すために 信号が赤だっ
たが道路を向かい側へ渡った。
だが、地元の警官が 信号無視の違反切符を切ろ
うとした。
で、Leon は その警官を買収しようとした。
が、すぐさま逮捕され、地元の裁判官が戻って来る
までの間 留置所に入れられることになった。
そんな最中に 地元の保安官が 地元の少女を殺害
したというので 連続殺人容疑者とされる男を逮捕した。
保安官は その男を Leon の隣の牢に押し込んだ。」
(Leon Gorwald is a traveling salesman who stops in a small town
to buy gas. He crosses the street against the light and a local
policeman starts writing him a ticket for jaywalking.
Leon tries to bribe the officer and is promptly arrested and put
in a jail cell awaiting the return of the local judge.
In the meantime, the local sheriff has arrested a stranger, a sus-
pected serial killer, for murdering a local girl.
He tosses the suspected murderer into the cell next to Leon. )
「地元民の 連続殺人容疑者に対する感情は 悪化の
一途を辿り、そいつを リンチで 殺して しまおうという
暴徒が集まった。
ところがその頃までに、 留置所内では 捕らえられて
いた容疑者が 保安官をやっつけて 無理矢理 Leon
に着ているものを脱げ、と言って Leon の衣服に着
替えた。
容疑者は ちょうど 暴徒が 留置所になだれ込む前に
逃げ出し Leon が 容疑者と間違われて捕まり、あわや
首を吊られるところであったが、土壇場で 保安官に
助けられた。
Leon に対する 信号無視の罪は 取り下げられ、Leon は
この町を去った。
ところが、なんと、留置所から逃亡した容疑者の男は
何の罪も犯しておらず、Leon が 連続殺人犯であった
のだ。
暫し後、車を運転していた Leon は 可愛いヒッチハイカー
の女性に声をかけ、その女性は応じて同乗した、この男
が 連続殺人犯であることも知らずに.............」
(The mood of the towns people begins to grow ugly and a lynch local mob
assembles.
But by now the suspect has overpowered the sheriff and forced Leon to
change clothes.
The suspect escapes just before a lynch mob storms the prison, and
Leon is mistakenly taken to be hanged, but is saved by the sheriff at
the last moment. The charges against Leon are dropped and he leaves
town.
However, the escaped suspect was an innocent man, and Leon is the
real killer.
Leon later stops for a pretty hitchhiker who accepts his offer of a
ride without knowing that he is the serial killer..................)
