"shiftless" は
「才覚のない、無能な」
「やる気のない、怠惰な」
「逃げ腰の、不甲斐ない、意気地のない」
という意味で、反対語は "shifty" です。
"shift" には 「小細工を弄する(こと)」、「言い抜け
る(こと)」という意味があり これから派生した英単
であろうと思われます。

不甲斐ない夫が ヒッチコック劇場 "Lonely Place"
(人里離れた処) に登場します。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Stella の夫 Emory は 桃を育てている果樹園を
やっているのだが 臆病者である。
ある朝のこと、Stella が Emory に 量が多い目の
朝食を出していた時、窓際にリスがやってきた。
彼女は リスを撫でてやり エサと水を与えた。
その時、家の近くの埃っぽい道を歩いている浮浪者
が目についた。
桃をたくさん摘まなきゃならないが、摘み賃は この村
じゃ 一日６ドルが相場だ、けれど あの浮浪者なら
５ドルでいけるかも知れんな、と Emory は呟いた。
Emory は その浮浪者を呼び止めて家に入れた。
そして、日に３ドル、プラス食事と裏の納屋の寝床
を提供するから 桃摘みをやらないか と掛け合った。
Stella は 夫の桃摘み作業を 少しでも軽くしてやろう
として その浮浪者を雇うことにした。
浮浪者は ミドルネームもラストネームも無い ただの
Jesse だ、と名乗った。
出してやった朝飯を Jesse は 一気に飲み込むように
して食い、トマトやパンを 持っていた大型ナイフで
切り分けた。
Stella は そのナイフ を しまうようにと 彼に言った。」
(Stella is married to a cowardly peach farmer named Emory.
One morning Stella is serving her husband Emery a big breakfast
when a squirrel appears on the front window screen.
She fondles the rodent and gives it food and water, then spots
a tramp walking down the public dirt road near their home.
Emery says that he has plenty of peaches to pick, and the going
wage in the valley is $6 per day, but he might get this tramp to
work for $5/day.
Emory invites the tramp inside, offering him three dollars a day
plus board and a place in the back yard.
Stella hires him to help her husband harvest the peach crop.
The tramp says his name is Jesse with no middle or last name.
Jesse gobbles down his breakfast, using a big knife to slice a
tomato and some bread.
Stella asks him to put the knife away. )
「外にいる肥えたリスはペットなのか、と Jesse が
Stella に訊いた。
そうよ、と Stella は 答えた。
晩のシチューにするのに あのリスを サバいてやって
もいいぜ、と Jesse は 応じた。
数分後、庭から Jesse の笑い声がするのが聞こえた
ので Stella が駆けつけてみると ペットのリスが死んで
横たわっていた。彼女は ビックリ仰天して大声をあげた。
Jesse の 奇行 と 携帯しているナイフへの彼の執着心
に Stella は 恐怖を覚え始めた。
Emory は Jesse が怖いという Stella の言い分を 全く
信じようとしなかった。」
(Jesse asks Stella whether the fat squirrel outside is a pet.
She says that it is. He replies that he could kill it so she could
make stew for supper. A few minutes later, she hears Jesse's
laughter in the yard, rushes outside to find her pet squirrel lying
dead, and screams.
Jesse's strange behavior and fascination with a knife that he
carries begins to frighten her.
Emory, however, refuses to believe her. )
「或る日、果樹園の遠くの端で Jesse と一緒に作業
していた Stella が Jesse に襲われ、逃げようとした。
が、Jesse は Stella を捕まえた。
刺し殺すぞ、と Jesse は Stella を脅した。
だが、Stella は 気丈に闘い Jesse から逃れた。
Jesse は そのまま 逃げ去って行った。
Stella は 夫が所有しているトラックを運転して
自宅に向かった。
寝ていた Emory を起こし、Jesse との闘いの事
を 話した。
彼女の叫び声を聞くには聞いたのだが、怖ろしく
なって 手も足も出なかった、と Emory は白状した。
怒り心頭に発した Stella は 夫を刺し殺してしまった。
で、Stella は警察に電話し、夫殺しの罪を 逃げている
Jesse に被せた。
不甲斐ない夫 と 凶悪な浮浪者 に オサラバ だ。」
(One day on far side of the farm Stella is attacked by Jesse and
she tries to run away, but is caught by Jesse. He threatens to
stab her, but she fights him off. Jesse flees.
She escapes in her husband's truck and heads home.
There she awakens Emory and tells him about Jesse.
Emory, however, confesses that he heard her screams, but was
too afraid to do anything.
Stella angrily stabs her husband and kills him.
She then calls the police and blames the murder on the fleeing
Jesse.
It's a goodbye to both the shiftless husband and evil drifter. )
