"peer" は ラテン語の "par"(等しい) が "per"
という形でフランス語に入り、これが英語に入って
変化し、1250年頃に "peer" で定着したようです。
"peer" は、
「社会的に同等の地位の人」
「法律的に対等な人」
「才能・能力が同程度の人」
「価値・質が同等のもの」
それに、
「高貴の人、貴族」
という意味があります。
"peer" の成句に、
" a jury of one's peers "
がありますが、これは 「～と同等の地位の陪審員」
という意味で、ヒッチコック劇場の作品のタイトルに
" A Jury of Her Peers "
という形で使われています。
具体的に どんな 意味なのでしょうか。

家の中では Wrights氏の妻 Millie が 妙な動きをして

なっていた、と Millie は 言うのだが、地区検事は 彼女
が 夫を 殺したものと 確信していた。
Millie は 夫殺しの罪で逮捕された。」
(Jim Hale stops in to see the Wrights and ask if they would like
to share a party line telephone.
He finds that Millie Wright is acting strangely and her husband
strangled in their bed.
Millie claims she found her husband like that when she came in
from feeding the chickens but the local district attorney is
convinced she killed her husband.
Millie is arrested for the murder of her husband. )
「ところが、後日 彼女は 証拠不十分で釈放された。
Millie の隣人 Sarah と 保安官の妻 Mary Peters は
自分たちで もう少し 調べてみることにした。
彼女たちは Millie が 夫殺しの犯人であるという証拠
を見つけた。 が、同時に、彼女の夫は とてつもない
暴君で、殺されて当然だろう、との思いを持った。
Sarah Hale は 理想的な夫の像とは とても言えない夫
を相手に 辛くて孤独な生活をしてきた Millie に とても
同情し、可哀想に思った。
どうにかしなきゃ、という気になった。
で、ふたりは、発見した証拠を当局に提出しないで 黙り
込むことに決めた............」
(However, she is later released for lack of evidence.
Millie's neighbor Sarah Hale and the sheriff's wife Mary Peters
decide to do some investigating on their own.
They find evidence that Millie is the murderer, but they also
discovered that Millie's husband was a violent brute who
probably deserved what he got.
Sarah Hale is quite sympathetic and feels sorry for Millie who
lived a hard, lonely life with a less than ideal husband and
takes steps to do something about it.
Instead of turning in the evidence, the two decide to say
nothing. )
タイトルの "A Jury of Her Peers" は 女性として
「同じ思い] を持つ陪審、という意味を持たせている
ように思います。
