"render” は ラテン語 "reddo" (返す to give back)
がロマンス語経由で英語に入り変化したもので、
「返す」「渡す」というのが基本的な意味です。
が、覚えておきたい 次のような意外な意味もあります。
① (役を)演じる、解釈して表現・描写・演奏する
A good actor renders a character to the life.
[名優は 人物を生き写しに 見事に演ずる]
② 翻訳する
Render the following into Japanese.
[次の文を和訳せよ]
③ 壁の下塗りをする
Plasterers rendered the wall in the park.
[左官屋さんたちが 公園の壁を下塗りしていた]
ところで、 "services rendered" は 「提供された役務」
という意味でもあり、「役務は提供された」 (=役務完了) と
いう意味にもなります。
ヒッチコック劇場の "Services Rendered" は 上記の後者
の意味で タイトルにしています。
どんな役務が完了したのでしょう。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「建設工事現場を通行中に ある若者の頭に 落下物が
当たった。
浮浪者が その若者に寄って来て声をかけ、彼の仲間
に一杯おごらそうとした。
お互い自己紹介ぐらいしよう、ということになったのだが
その若者は その時に初めて 自分が誰なのか まったく
分からなくなっていることに気付いた： 記憶喪失だ。
自分の名前も分からず、何処へ行こうとしていたの
かも 思い出せない。
自分の財布の中に 乏しい手掛かりがあった；
千ドル札一枚 と Dr.Ralph Mannix の名前と住所を書いた
紙片である。
若者は兎も角も その Mannix という人物の処に行ってみた。
が、Dr.Mannix は 若者のことは 何一つ知らなかった。
Dr.Mannix には 若者が誰だか 一切 分からなかった。」
(While passing a construction site a young man is hit on the head.
A street person cons him into buying them a drink.
It's only when they go to introduce themselves that the young man
realizes he has no idea who he is and has suffered a complete loss
of memory ; he gets amnesia.
He can't remember who he is or where he was going.
The only clues he finds in his wallet : a thousand dollar bill and
the name and address for a Dr. Ralph Mannix.
He visits Mannix, but the doctor doesn't recognize him.
Dr. Mannix has no idea who he is. )
「Dr. Mannix は 何か 身近なものが 記憶を蘇らせること
ができるかも知れない、と その若者にほのめかした。
で、Dr. Mannix の事務所にいる時、若者は Dr. の奥さん
の写真を見て、自分に妻がいたかどうか 考えた。
後になって、若者は 記憶を取り戻した；
自分が誰なのか、自分は何故 Dr. の名前と 千ドル札を
持っているのか 分かったのだ。
千ドル札は Dr. の奥さんに貰ったものだと思い出した。
若者は 殺し屋で 夫を殺すようにと 奥さんに雇われた
のであった。
若者は もう一度 Dr. を訪ね、契約を履行した；
役務完了だ。」
(The doctor suggests that something familiar may trigger his
memories to return.
But while at his office, he sees a picture of the doctor's wife
and wonders whether he has a wife of his own.
Later his memory returns ; the young man recalls who he is
and why he had the doctor's name and a $1000.
He realizes that the thousand dollars was from the doctor's
wife.
He's a hitman and she hired him to kill her husband.
He visits the doctor again and fulfills his contract ; services
rendered. )
