" a personal matter" は 「個人的な経験」という
ほどの意味ですが、 "personal" と似た英単に
"private" があります。
その違いは ？ 極めて大雑把に言えば、
personal ： 特定の個人の私事に関わるもの
private ： 公(おおやけ：公的) に対する私的なもの
ということで、"personal" は 個人に関わるのに
対して"private" は 個人は勿論、団体・グループ
にも関わるもので、"a private enterprise" は
私的企業を指します。
詮索はこの辺にして、きょうの英単 "a personal
matter"が その儘タイトルになっているヒッチコック
劇場の作品がありますので ちょっと覗いてみること
にいたしましょう。
結構 おもしろい結末になっています。
「Joe Philips は メキシコの人里離れた建設現場で
トンネル掘削工事の監督をしているのだが、工事が
なかなか順調に進捗しない。
或る日、どうした訳かは分からぬが、Bret Johnson
という名の男が 工事現場に現れ、残す工期 ６週間
の間、Philips の助っ人をしてくれることになった。
工事現場で生き埋めになった仲間を ふたりで救出した
こともあった。
或る晩、 Philips は 工事現場で監督を殺して逃げた
技術士を指名手配中であるというニュースをラジオで
聞いた； これを聞いた Philips は 最近 この現場に
来た Johnson という男の身元を知りたくて 彼の
持ち物を調べねばと 焦った。
が、Johnson が Philips に 銃を突き付けて それを
制止した。」
(Joe Philips is lead engineer on a failing tunneling project at an
isolated construction site in Mexico.
One day Bret Johnson mysteriously arrives to be his assistant
for the project's last six weeks.
Later the two men risk their lives and save a trapped fellow worker.
One night Philips hears a radio newscast about an ongoing manhunt
of an engineer who murdered his construction boss; this prompts
Philips to search through Johnson's things to find his true identity,
but he is stopped when Johnson pulls a gun on him. )
「６週間の工期中は 現場を離れることのできないふたり
は 兎に角 完工時までは 一緒に仕事をするほかなかった。
お互いに 相手を 疑いながら。
トンネル工事は定められら期日より一日早めに終了した。
そうして、監督の Philips が 殺人犯であることが明らか
にされた。
Johnson は 彼を逮捕するためにやって来た警官である
ことも明らかになった。
裁判で きみが 仲間の命を救った善良な人だ ということ
を 証言してあげるよ、と Johnson は Philips に言った。」
(Since there is no way to leave the site for six weeks, the men work
together to finish the job, despite their suspicions of each other.
The tunnel is completed one day before the deadline, and it is revealed
that Philips is the murderer, and Johnson is the police officer who
traveled there to arrest him.
Johnson tells Philips that he will testify on his behalf in court because
he has shown himself to be a good man in saving their co-worker's life.)
