"match" は "matching outfits" (ペアルック) で
お馴染みの "match" です。
因みに "ペアルック" は 和製英語ですね。
"match" は 古英語 "gemaecca"（対になっている
ものの一方) が "macche" と変化、更に 900年頃
に "match" と変化して定着したようです。
「～に釣り合う(もの) 」というのが基本的な意味です。
ヒッチコック劇場 の作品 "The Matched Pearl" は
「(いま持っている真珠と) ペア に なるような もう
ひとつの真珠」 という意味ですが............
どんな お話 なのでしょうか。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「宝石商の Laurent Dubois は McCabe 船長から
預かった ５千ドルもする 立派な黒真珠を 売却した。
McCabe に渡すべき売却代金を Dubois は くすねた。
Dubois から黒真珠を買った Hubert Wilkens は 妻に
こう言われた： 黒真珠 たった ひとつじゃ どうにも
ならないわ、あなた、もう ひとつ 何とか探してきてよ。
で、Wilkens は 買った黒真珠とペアになるような 黒真珠
を もうひとつ さがしてくれ、と Dubois に 頼んだ。
宝石商 Dubois は また お金をくすねることができるかも
知れぬという金銭欲に負けてしまった。
Dubois は 早速 前に黒真珠を預かった McCabe 船長の
もとに急ぎ、黒真珠を もうひとつ 探してくれないか、と
頼んだ。」
(Laurent Dubois, a jewler, sells a $5000 magnificent black pearl
left with him by Captain McCabe.
He then cheats McCabe out of some of the money owed to him.
Hubert Wilkens, the pearl's buyer, asks Dubois for a second matched
pearl, because Hubert's wife doesn't know what to do with only one
pearl and insists that he finds another.
Greediness gets the better of the jeweler Dubois.
Dubois returns to the pearl's original owner, Captain McCabe, to see
if he can find another. )
「最初の黒真珠を預けた時に Dubois に してやられたと
思っていた McCabe は 初めはイヤだと言って 断った。
だが結局、ひとつだけなら 何とかする、でも 最初の
黒真珠の件で 騙されたから 今度の黒真珠は とても
高値になるよ、と McCabe は Dubois に言った。
買い手の Wilkens に もっと高値を吹っ掛けることが
できると考えた Dubois は 黒真珠を もうひとつ 探すこと
ができれば 言い値で買う、と McCabe に言った。
結局、Dubois は 黒真珠を手にし、McCabe に破格値を
支払った。
そうして、Dubois は ”ビックリ仰天” も手に入れた。
残念なことに、Dubois は してやられたことに 気付いた。
McCabe と Wilkens が 裏で組んでいたのだ。
Dubois は 同じ黒真珠を ２度買ったのであった !! 」
(McCabe feels that he was cheated on the first deal and, at first, he
refuses.
After all, McCabe says he can provide one, but since he has been
cheated he demands large money.
Figuring that he can charge Wilkens a much larger amount, Dubois
accepts the price if he can find a second pearl.
Dubois eventually gets the pearl and pays the large amount.
And Dubois gets a big surprise as well.
Unfortunately Dubois disocvers that he has been conned.
McCabe and Wilkens were working together.
Dubois bought the same pearl twice !! )
