"throwback" は 文字通り 「投げ返すこと、投げ戻すこと」
ですが、比喩的に 「先祖返り (したもの) 」と言う意味でも
使われます。
最近は、SNS に投稿する 昔の写真や懐かしい思い出の品
などのことも指すようです。

また、昔 よくあった考え方や態度、行動などのことも指し、
端的に言えば 「昔気質」「年の功」 という意味でも使われ
ます。
恋の鞘当てをした 若者と初老の男、軍配は 初老の男に
上がりました。
ヒッチコック劇場の "The Throwback" という作品です。
初老の男、一体 どんな手を使ったのでしょうか。
「恋人の Elliot に問い詰められた Enid は、Cyril
Hardeen という別の男性とも 付き合っていたことを
遂に 認めた。
その男というのは、彼女の話によれば、Elliot よりも
年上で、ずっと優しく、虫けらさえ殺せないような人だ
という。そんな男なんかと すぐに別れろ、と Elliot は
Enid に迫った。
Enid は Cyril という男性と別れることにした。
Elliot と Cyril とが 遂に顔を合わせた。
Elliot は Cyril が Enid の言っていた通りの男だと
分かった。
事実、Cyril は 自分自身のことを 何よりも名誉と
礼節を重んじる男だ、と そう言った。
Cyril には Enid を諦める積りなど無く、Enid が自分の
処に留まるような手を打とうと考えた。」
(When Enid's boyfriend Elliot presses her, she finally admits that she
has been seeing another man, Cyril Hardeen. Elliot insists that she
break off with the other man whom she describes as a older, gentler
man who wouldn't harm a flea. She agrees to break it off with Cyril.
When they finally meet, Elliot finds Cyril much as Enid described him.
In fact, Cyril describes himself as a throwback - someone who values
honor and civility above all else.
Cyril also has no intention of giving Enid up and so puts into action a
plan to ensure that she will remain his. )
「Cyril は Elliot に決闘を挑んだ。
が、Elliot は Cyril の歳のことを考えて 止めようと言った。
但し、決闘の習わしの通りに Cyril が 代理人を出せば
その代理人を決闘の相手にすることを受ける、と Elliot
は言った。
その代理人は強かった。Elliot は 散々に打ちのめされた。
ところが、年の功で 狡猾な Cyril は 自分の方が Elliot に
打ちのめされた、という芝居を打って Elliot をハメたのだ。
帰宅した Elliot を 警察が待ち構えていた。
警察は Elliot を Cyril の家へ連れて行った。そこには
Elliot に打ちのめされたという Cyril が Enid に看病されて
ながら 横たわっていたのだ。
Elliot が こんな ひどいこと を するなんて、と Enid は
嘆いた。
Elliot が いくら本当の事を言っても Enid は ちっとも信じ
ないで Elliot を ポイし、Cyril の恋人となってしまった。」
Cyril challenges Elliot to a duel. Elliot refuses given Cyril's age.
Elliot agrees, however, when Cyril offers a proxy.
The proxy beats Elliot severely. But the older and more sophisticated
Cyril frames Eliot for beating Cyril up.
Elliot returns home, but is greeted by the police. They take him back
to Cyril's home where Enid is found tending to the old man's wounds.
Cyril claims that Elliot beat him up.
Enid is horrified that Elliot would do such a thing.
Enid refuses to believe the truth and dumps him to stay with Cyril............
悔しいけれど "the throwback" (ムカシ の ひと) には
脱帽ですね。
