"opportunity" は ラテン語 "opportunus"(op-
接近する + portus 港 ＋ -nus 形容詞語尾
⇒ 港に近い = 便利な) が 英語に入り 15世紀
の初め "opportune"(時宜を得た、好都合の) と
いう形で定着、これが 名詞形 "opportunite"
として派生、"opportunity" と変化し定着した
ものだそうです。
"opportunity" は、
やりたいこと、やるべきことができるように
なる 格好の状況・機会、つまり 好機
のことをいいます。
好機なんて そう易々とは 巡ってきませんね。
でも、夫のことを心底から毛嫌いしていた妻に
絶好のチャンスが 巡ってきました。
ヒッチコック劇場の "The Opportunity" という
タイトルの作品です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Paul Devore は デパートの部長をしているのだが、
結婚生活は うまく いっていない。
自分のことを とことん 毛嫌いしている妻に 共有
財産の半分を持って行かれるのがイヤで、何とか
そうしなくてもいい方法がないものかと 考えあぐね
ていた。
デパートで 万引きをした Lois Callen という女を
捕まえた時、彼に いい考えが浮かんだ。
オレの言うことに協力してくれれば きみを 警察
には突き出さないよ、と 彼は女に言った。
で、彼は 30何歳の万引き女に、妻が出かけて
いる今週末の日曜に 彼の家へ来るようにと
脅すような口ぶりで言った。」
(Paul Devore is an unhappily married department store manager
who hatches a scheme to avoid sharing any community property
with his wife, who deeply loathes him.
When he catches Lois Callen shoplifting he hatches an idea.
He tells Lois that he will not turn her in, if she agrees to be part
of a plan of his.
He blackmails a thirty-something shoplifter into coming to his house
the following Sunday evening, when his wife is out of the house.)
「きっと 体を求めてくるに違いない、と思っていた
万引き女は、Paul の家へやって来て 驚いた。
夫婦用の主寝室が 乱雑に掻き回されて物盗りに
あったかのような様子なのだ。
妻の持ち物の貴重品が すべて 無くなっていた。
万引き女は これは Paul の仕業だと 気付いた。
Paul が 万引き女に頼んだのは、物盗りに遭った
かように見せかけるため、体を ベッドに縛り付ける
ことだけであった。
何よりも大事にしていた持ち物が 全部無くなって
しまった以上、妻のKate は 離婚に応じるだろう、と
Paul は希望を持った。」
(Assuming he was going to force her to have sex, she is surprised to
find the master bedroom ransacked and burglarized.
All of the valuables of wife's possession were missing.
She realizes Devore has staged a robbery and all he wants the shop-
lifter to do is tie him to the bed to make it look like a robbery.
He hopes that his wife Kate will divorce him now that her treasured
possessions are all gone. )
「だが、妻の Kate が帰宅して 夫のこのザマを見たら、
一体何と言うだろう ？
暫し後に Kate が 帰宅した。
強盗に 命を取られなくて よかったわね、と Paul に
言った。
縛られた縄を解く代わりに、Kate は この絶好のチャンスを
捉え夫を 殺した.................. 」
(But what will Kate say when she gets home and finds her husband in this
state ?
Later Kate comes home and tells Paul how lucky he is that the
burglars didn't kill him.
Instead of freeing her husband, however, she takes this opportunity
to kill him..............)
こういうのも "opportunity" と言うんですね～
