"manacle" は ラテン語 "manicula"(鋤の柄、小さな手)
が "manicle"(手錠) という形で中期フランス語に入り、
1300年頃に "manacle" という形で定着したようです。
通常 複数形 "manacles" で、
「手錠 (= handcuff) 」
という意味で使われます。
"manacle" は また、
「手錠をかける」
「束縛する」 (手枷・足枷)
という動詞としても使われます。
ヒチコック劇場の "The Manacled" は 歩行困難な
鉄の重しをつけた脱げない靴 (Oregon boots) で
「束縛された」囚人 のことを指しています。

脱税・不当広告などの何れか) を犯した Stephen
Fontaine は足枷をされて San Quentin の州刑務所
へ護送されている。
Fontaine は 口先三寸 魔物のように弁の立つ男で、
横領を はたらいた囚人である。
彼は 所謂”オレゴンの靴” と言われている 足枷を
嵌められているのだ。
その足枷を外せる ただ ひとつの鍵は 警部補の
BenRockwell が持っている。
護送中、Fontaine は 逃がしてくれ、と 掛け合った。
護送警備の Rockwell に ５万ドルを出すから それと
引き換えに 自由の身にしてくれ、と言って抱き込もう
とした。」
(Shackled white-collar criminal Stephen Fontaine is being
transported via train to San Quentin.
Fontaine is a thief with the silver tongue of a devil.
Fontaine is manacled by the so-called "Oregon boots", and
police sergeant Ben Rockwell has the only key.
While en route, Fontaine tries to negotiate an escape;
to bribe his escorting Rockwell for his freedom with $50,000. )
「Rockwell 警部補は 謹厳実直な警官であるが、
５万ドルというお金は 彼のような人でも 興味を
そそられる金額であった。
終着駅に着いたのだが Rockwell は Fontaine の
抱き込みには応じていない。
Rockwell 警部補が スポーツカー雑誌を ペラペラと
めくっている時に Fontaine が、 この列車に乗って
いるスリが あんたのジャケットのポケットに封筒を
入れたぜ、と言った。
Rockwell 警部補が 確かめてみると、確かに封筒
が入っていた。
封筒の中身は； ５万ドルであった。」
(Sgt. Rockwell is an honest cop, but $50,000 is enough to
tempt even someone like him.
When they reach their final stop, Rockwell still has not
accepted.
As the sergeant leafs through a magazine about sports
cars, Fontaine tells Rockwell that a pickpocket on the
train has put an envelope in Rockwell's jacket pocket.
Rockwell checks, and sure enough it's there.
What's inside ; $50,000. )
「こうなると 警部補としては 囚人を解き放ってやら
ざるを得ないのか ？
いや、Rockwell 警部補 は Fontaine に飛びかかった。
だが、Fontaine が 警部補の銃を奪い、彼を撃ち殺して
しまった。
Fontaine は 警部補のポケットの中の鍵を見つけた。
”オレゴンの靴” を外す鍵だ。
だが、なんと、その鍵は Fontaine が撃った銃弾で
壊れてしまっていた。
もう足枷を外すことができない。自由の身にはなれない。
ずっと..............」

No, Rockwell struggles with Fontaine.
Fontaine grabs for Rockwell's gun and shots and kills him.
Fontaine finds, in Rockwell's pocket, the key to the boot,
but it has been destroyed by the bullet.
He cannot unlock the manacles and cannot free himself.....

"重い"足枷を ずっと 引き摺って生きてゆくよりは
自首した方がよさそうです。
が、今度は 殺人という "重い"罪で処罰されること
