"backfire" は 「内燃機関が弁の開閉時期不調整
などのために引き起こす逆火[ﾊﾞｯｸﾌｧｲｱ] のこと、
またはその逆火を引き起こすこと」 を意味します。
ここから、派生的に
・ 計画や期待が裏目に出る・逆の結果を生じる
・ 裏目、期待外れ
という意味で使われるようになりました。
{例] The plan has backfired.
(計画は オジャンになった)
= The plan was a backfire.
あまり用意周到とは言えぬ計画、それも殺人計画
を立てた姉弟が 最後の詰めが甘く、計画オジャン
の憂き目を見るというお話があります。
ヒッチコック劇場の "Kill with Kindness" (優しく
殺そう) というタイトルの作品です。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「生命保険金をうまく騙し取ろうというので、蝶の
蒐集と野鳥観察に凝っている Fritz Oldman と
姉のKatherine が自宅に放火する計画を立てた。
計画をうまく成し遂げるためには 死体が要るのだ。
ドンピシャの死体候補がいた。Jorgy という宿無し
の男だ。
この男なら Ｆｒｉｔｚ が火災で死んだことにするには
もってこいの男だ。Fritz の身代わりに死んで貰おう、
と 姉弟は考えた。
この男以上に ピッタリの男はいない、と いうので
姉のKatharine は この男 を 自宅に連れ込んで
形ばかりのシチューを食べさせてやった。」
(Hoping to pull off an life insurance fraud, Fritz Oldman - a butterfly
hunter and birdwatcher - and his sister Katherine plan to torch
their house.
In order to pull off the scam, they need a body.
They find a prospective corpse in a homeless man named Jorgy,
to die in Fitz's place, faking Fritz's death.
He looks perfect and Katherine brings him home inside and feeds
him some stew. )
「宿無し の その男は 何か おかしいぞ、と 薄々
感じていた。
その通りだ； 姉弟は その男の死体を 弟の死体の
代わりにしようとしているのだ。
ところが、計画は オジャンになってしまった。
それは 自宅に火を付けた時である。
宿無し男を 打ちのめして 気を失っている 間に
Fritz の指輪をはめる、という計画だった。
そうした上で 火を付けることになっていたのだ。
肝心の指輪の処までは 万事うまく進んでいた。」
(The man dimly suspects something is wrong.
It is ; she and her brother are planning to substitute his body for
that of her brother.
The plan backfires when, once they have lit the fire.
Their plan is to knock him out and place Fritz's ring around his finger.
They will then set fire to the house.
All goes according to plan until they need the ring. )
「なんと運の悪いことに、Fritz が 指輪を外せないのだ。
だから、死体が Fritz だという証明になる指輪を Jorgy
の指に嵌められない。
自宅に火を放った後なので 姉弟は 自分たちの身と
Jorgyを 燃え盛る家から 安全な場所へ 移さねば
ならなくなった。
気を失っている Jorgy を 正気 に 戻らせて
付き添いながら猛火の家から安全な場所へ
連れ出すことに 姉と弟は決めた。
この "救出劇" を見ていた人たちは 老人を
火中から助け出したというので Fritx と 姉を
大いに褒め称えた...........」
（Unfortunately Fritz cannot get it off his finger, being unable to
put Fitz's identifying ring on Jorgy.
The siblings have no choice but to save themselves and Jorgy.
They decide to wake up Jorgy and escort him out of the blazing
house, watching the house burn.
People who witness the "rescue" praise Fritz and his sister for
saving the old man from the fire.................）
この場合は "the plan backfired" (計画オジャン) で
よかったと思います。
指輪が抜けなくなることって 偶にありますね。
