"orderly" は ラテン語 "ordo"(列、階級、順序)
から英語に入った "order" (序列、秩序、命令)
の形容詞で、「整然とした、規律正しい」という
意味ですね。
”orderly world" は 「秩序ある世界」のことですが、
"orderly" には
「神や運命が定めた」
という少々堅い意味もあります。
"The Orderly World of Mr. Appleby" という
タイトルの作品がヒッチコック劇場の中にあります。
これは 「Appleby氏の ままならぬ世界」とでも
言うことができるでしょう。
どんなお話か、ちょっと覗いてみましょう。
「Laurence Appleby は 骨董屋なのだが、同業者に
何千ドルもの借金を抱えている。
好みの高価な骨董品を買い揃えるのだが、誰にも
売り渡そうとしないために 儲かりはしないのだ。
業者の代理人が借金の催促にやって来て、２週間
以内に借金を返済しないと 商品を引き揚げてしまう
という。」
(Laurence Appleby is an antique dealer who owes his business
associates thousands of dollars.
His antique shop is losing money because he is so fond of the
best items that he refuses to sell them to anyone.
A representative from a supplier visits the shop and tells
Appleby that he must pay his bill within two weeks, or else the
supplier will reclaim his inventory.)
「彼の妻は そこそこの遺産を持っているのだが、
夫を助けてやろうという気は毛頭ない。
妻の生命保険を担保に借入をしたいという夫の
申し出にも 妻は 反対した。
彼は妻を殺すことに決めた。
事故死について 本を読んだ彼は 完璧な方法を
知った。
妻が敷物の上に立っている時に ふいに 敷物を
引くことにより転倒させて殺すという方法だ。
これがうまくいった。そうして 彼は妻の遺産
を手に入れたのだ。」
(His wife has a moderate endowment, but she will not help him.
And his wife refuses to let him borrow from her insurance policy.
Deciding to murder her, he consults a book on accidental deaths
and finds a perfect method: killing her by pulling a rug out from
under her.
He succeeds and get her inheritance. )
「妻の遺産を手に入れたものの、まだまだ借金
は減らない。
そこで、裕福な未亡人 Martha Sturgisに目を
つけ、口説いて結婚した。彼女は 彼の借金を返済
してくれる、という。
ところが、結婚しても 彼は 店の奥に入り浸りで、
構ってくれない新妻は 苛立った。
そして、彼の借金も膨れ上がり始めた。新妻は もう
借金を返済してくれなくなった。
そこで、彼は 先妻の時と同じ方法で この新妻を殺そう
と企んだ。」
(Since he still has debts, he woos and marries wealthy widow
Martha Sturgis who agrees to pay his debts.
His habit of spending most of his time in his shop, however,
makes his new wife angry.
Appleby's debts begin to grow and his new wife refuses to
pay them.
He then plots to kill her the same way he did his first wife. )
「だが、やがて 妻が彼のすべてを知り尽くしていて、
自分の身を守るために 慎重な手立てを講じている
ことを 彼は知った。
新妻は 事故死に関する書物を読み、顧問弁護士に
夫が考えている殺しの方法を 伝えていた。
新妻と顧問弁護士は 彼が 先妻を殺したという証拠を
握っていた。」
(But he soon learns that she knows all about him, and has made
careful arrangements to protect herself.
The new Mrs. Appleby has read the book on accidental deaths
and informs her attorney about her husband's method of murder.
Martha and her lawyer have evidence that Appleby killed his
first wife.)
「もし 自分の身に何か起こったら すぐ 警察に連絡
して欲しい、と彼女は 顧問弁護士に手紙で伝えていた。
手紙を読んだ顧問弁護士は 彼女に身の上に変わりは
ないか、と心配し 電話をかけた。
彼女は 電話をとろうとして 立ち上がり 電話機のところ
に行こうとした時、ほつれた敷物に足をとられて転倒し、
そのまま 死んでしまった...............」
(She tells her attorney to call the police if anything happens to
her.
The attorney reads the letter and calls Mrs. Appleby to see if
she is all right.
As she moves to get the phone, she accidently trips on a dishev
eled rug and falls to her death.....................)
