"payback" は 「払い戻し、返金」「投資元金回収、
資本回収」 という意味ですが、 俗語で、
「報復、 返報、 仕返し 」
という意味でも 使われます。
・ This is payback for cheating on me, beeyatch !!
(オレを騙しやがって、倍返しだ、この野郎め。)
"payback" を "the act of revenge" （報復行為）
という意味でタイトルに使った映画があります。
1995年制作の "PAYBACK" という作品です。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Oscar Bonsetter は つまらないチンピラで
酒屋に盗みに入り捕まってしまった。
刑務所で 何年も過ごしたのだが、そこで
年老いた服役囚 Macという男と知り合った。
この Mac という男は たいした金持ちだ、と
いう噂が 刑務所内で取り沙汰されていた。
なんでも、強盗をした大金を どこかに隠している、
という。」
(Oscar Bonsetter is a punk and during a robbery to a liquor
store, he is arrested. He spends many years in prison, where
he becomes friend of the old prisoner Mac. There is a legend
in the prison that Mac has a great fortune, fruit of a robbery,
hidden somewhere. )
「この隠し金の在り処を聞き出そうと 看守の Gully
が Mac を 痛めつけた。
Mac の体が悪くなり、死ぬ直前に Mac は Bonsetter
に 隠し金の在り処を教えたが、 先ず Ｇｕｌｌｙ を 殺す
ことを 約束させられた。」
(Trying to get information about the location of this amount,
Mac is badly treated by the guard Gully. Mac becomes very ill,
and a few minutes before he dies, he tells Bonsetter where the
money is hidden, under the promise that he would kill Gully first. )
「隠し金の在り処を教えて貰ったのはいいのだが、
正確な場所は Mac の独房の壁に貼ってある絵でしか
分からない。
しかし、看守の Gully が Mac の独房にあったものを
全て持ち去った。
看守の Gully は てっきり Ｍａｃ が Bonsetter に
隠し金の在り処を教えているものと思い込み Bonsetter
を締め付け始めた。
ところが、思いもよらず突然 Gully が 交通事故に遭い
大怪我を負い目が見えなくなり もう 刑務所で看守として
働くことができなくなった。」
(However, Bonsetter depends on a drawing exposed in Mac's
jail to get the precise spot, but Gully takes all Mac possessions
with him. Gully starts pressing Bonsetter, believing Mac told
him the place where the money is hidden, but suddenly he
suffers a car accident, becomes blind and is not able to work
in prison anymore. )
「３年後のこと、Bonsetter は 刑期を終え出所、
自由の身となった。
で、刑務所を辞めた Gully の行方を 探し始めた。
Gully は 或る町の 道路沿いで 小っちゃなバーを
やっていた。
そこで Bonsetter は Gully の妻に出会い、バーで
雇って貰った。
Gully が Mac の独房から持ち去った地図を取り戻そう
としている中で Bonsetter は Gully の妻と 恋仲に
なってしまった。
さあ、これから たくさんの どんでん返しがあり、あっと
驚く結末が待っている、裏切りに満ち満ちているが........」
(Three years later, Bonsetter finishes his sentence, gets his
freedom and looks for Gully, who owns a small bar on a road.
Bonsetter meets Gully's wife Rose, is hired for working there
and becomes her lover, while trying to recover the map from
Gully.
Many plot points twist this story, until a surprising end, full of
betrayals.....................)
