"warlock" は 古英語 "waerloga" (waer 誓い ＋
loga 裏切者⇒ 誓いを破る者 ⇒ 悪魔) が ”war-
loghe" と変化、 900年頃に"warlock" という形
で定着したようです。
「魔法使い、魔術師、占い師、手品師」
という意味で使われます。
1600年代の魔法使いが 1980年代の現代に
逃げ込んできた、という内容の映画があります。
1989年制作の "Warlock" というタイトルの作品
です。
ご一緒に ちょっと 覗いてみましょう。
「Julian Sands は 1600年代の魔法使いで、
こっそりと悪さを働いていたのだが、1980年代
の ロサンジェルスへ 放り出されてしまった。
だが、そこでも Julian は 向こう見ずな悪さを
働き続けるのだ。
1691年のボストンで ある魔法使いが 死刑宣告
される処から このお話は 始まる。
魔王の力添えで その魔法使いは 死刑になる前
に 現代のロサンジェルスへ 放り出して貰った。
その魔法使いは Kassandra と ルームメイトの
Chas が住む家の窓を破って 勢いよく 飛び込んで
きた。
地元の酔っぱらいが 飛び込んできたものと勘違い
した ふたりは、その魔法使いを ひと晩 泊めてやる
ことにした。」
(Julian Sands oozes maleficence as a warlock of the 1600s
cast forth to 1980s Los Angeles, where he continues to work
his deviltry. The story begins in 1691 Boston when a warlock
is condemned to die. Calling for Satan's help, the warlock is
sent forward in time to contemporary Los Angeles, where he
comes crashing through the window of Kassandra and her room-
mate Chas, who think that the warlock is a LA drunk and let
him stay the night to sleep it off. )
「次の日、なんと その魔法使いが Chas を 惨殺して
しまう。
そして、魔法使いは 降霊術師の居所を探し出す。
この降霊術師は 悪魔に憑り付かれていて、その
魔法使いに 悪魔の大手引書３部を 探し出せ、と
命じる。大手引書は 魔女のバイブルで 神の秘密
の系譜が 記されているというのだ。」
(The next day, the warlock brutally murders Chas and then
locates a spiritualist who, possessed by the devil, tells the
warlock that he must find the three parts of the Grand Grimoire,
the witches' bible that contains the secret name of God.)
「一方、Chas が殺されたことに 心を痛めていた
Kassandra は GilesRedferne に出会う。
Giles は 現代に逃げ込んできた魔法使いを見つける
ために 16世紀の彼方から やってきた 追跡者なので
ある。
魔法使いを見つけるために Giles は 忙(せわ) しなく
”魔女の羅針盤” の針を合わせようと懸命になって
いた。
Kassandra は その隙に 警察を呼び Giles を 逮捕
させた。」
(Meanwhile, Kassandra, grieving over the death of Chas, comes
upon Giles Redferne, a warlock hunter from the 16th century,
sent into the future to find the warlock. While Giles is busily
putting together a "witch-compass" to track the warlock,
Kassandra calls the police and has him arrested. )
「ところが、なんと 魔法使いが戻ってきた。
魔法使いは Kassandra に 呪いをかけた。
彼女は そのまま 気を失ってしまい、翌朝 意識を
取り戻した時、20歳も 年をとってしまったことに
気付いた。
16世紀からやって来た 追跡者を あの魔法使いと
間違えて 投獄してしまったことに気付いた Kassandra
は 投獄された Giles を牢から出し、ふたりで あの
魔法使いを追う..............」
(But then the warlock returns and puts a curse on Kassandra.
She blacks out, only to awaken the next morning to discover
that she has aged twenty years. Realizing she has put the
wrong representative from the 16th century in jail, she bails
out Giles and they both go in search of the warlock.............）
