"forebode" は "fore"(事前に) ＋ "bode"(告知する)
ということから、”予言する”というのが原義で、
「(悪いことを) 予言・予示する」
「(未来の不幸・凶事を) 予感する」
「虫の知らせで知る」
という、少々 気分のよくない英単です。
セントルイス市長が 大型グライダーに試乗する前
に行った記者会見での発言は この英単の通りと
なりました。
1943年8月の出来事です。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「自身も飛行機操縦資格を持つ William Dee
Becker市長は、陸軍の大型グライダー試乗に
ついて 軽く考えていた。
1943年7月31日に 市役所で行われた 土曜の
朝の定例記者会見で 市長は 大型グライダー
の試乗について問われ、次のように語った。
諸君、人間死ぬのは たったの一回だけだ。
いずれはみんな 死ぬものなのさ。
Becker は そのように冗談を飛ばした。
そして、市会議員団の議長 A.P.Kaufmann
に触れて、もし、わたしの身に何か起こった
場合には すぐに わたしの職を引き継いで
くれる有能な男が控えているさ、と言った。」
(An airplane pilot himself, Mayor William Dee Becker
made light of his upcoming flight in an Army glider.
When a reporter asked him about it in his weekly
Saturday morning news conference at City Hall on
July 31, 1943, Becker had this to say.
"Gentlemen, you can die only once, and we all must
die sometime," Becker joked. Then, in a reference
to Board of Aldermen President A.P. Kaufmann, he
said, "If anything should happen to me, I'm leaving
an able man to step into my shoes." )
「記者たちは Becker の 言ったことを その
次の日に思い出していた。
Becker の発言の次の日に 当時 Lambert-
St.Louis市飛行場と呼ばれていた飛行場の
上空で Becker ほか９名を乗せた大型グライダー
の翼が 折れてしまったのである。
たった先ほど 飛行機に牽引されて大空に
飛び立ったグライダーが ２千フィートの高さから
真っ逆さまに墜落するさまを １万人の観衆が
腰を抜かさんばかりに驚いて見ていた。
日曜午後３時５５分に起きたこの墜落事故は
それまでで最悪の事故で、各紙とも 米軍の
イタリアでの勝利のニュースを押さえてトップ
記事として取り扱った。」
(Reporters recalled those words the next day when
a wing broke off of the glider carrying Becker and
nine other people above what was then called Lambert-
St. Louis Municipal Airport.
Ten thousand stunned spectators, who only moments
before cheered as a tow plane brought the glider into
the sky, watched as it nosedived 2,000 feet to the
ground.The accident at 3:55 on a Sunday afternoon
was the worst air disaster up to that time and for once
pushed aside news of American victories in Italy from
the tops of front pages. )
「このグライダーは 完全装備した兵士１５名と
ジープ １台を積み込めるように設計されており
墜落前のテスト・フライトでは何の問題もなかった
のだ。
Becker 市長が事故死し、 Kaufmann が 新市長
として就任した。」
(The glider, designed to carry 15 fully equipped soldiers
and one jeep, had made a successful test flight before
the crash.
With Becker gone, Kaufmann was sworn in as mayor. )
