"barfly" は ”酒場” の "蠅(ハエ)” というのですが.........
次のような人を指すようです。
・ (ホテルなどの) バーに入り浸りの人、常連
・ (バーで 他人に タダ酒をせびる) 呑み助、大酒呑み
・ (バーで しつこく酒をねだる) アル中
・ 金もないのに酒場に入り浸る困った飲んだくれ
あまり歓迎されない人のようで、男性を想像してしまい
ますが 女性にも "barfly" がいます。
Faye Dunaway (1941～) が barfly の "Wanda" という
女性を演じた映画があります。
"Henry" を演じる Mickey Rourke (1952～) と共演して
います。
1987年 "Barfly" という作品です。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Henry Chinaski にとって アメリカン・ドリームなんて
糞くらえで、どうにか人に認められる者になって 社会
のタガに嵌め込まれるなんて これっぽっちも考えた
こともない。
人生は自由気儘で 生きたいように生きるのが一番だ、
と思い込んでいて、ウイスキーを浴びるほど飲むことが
できれば言うことなし、なのである。」
(Henry Chinaski never cared for the American dream,
the thought of needing to become 'something' and fit
into the system disgusts him. He believes that life is
free and yours to live like you see fit, and if that in
some cases involves copious amounts of whiskey then
so be it.)
「Henryは、昼間 飲んだくれてラジオを聞いて過ごし、
夜はまた 飲んだくれて Eddy を相手に喧嘩をふっかけ
たりしている。
Henry にとって Eddy は 自己中の人間に特有の浅薄
さと厚顔の権化のように映るのだ。そんな最中に、Henry
は詩の数行や短編小説を ざっとメモすることもある。」
(Henry spends his days drinking and listening to the
radio, and he spends his nights drinking and fighting
against Eddy who he thinks personifies shallowness
and shameless self promoting. Sometimes in the mid-
dle of this he finds the time to jot down a few lines
of poetry or a short story. )
「 Eddy と喧嘩して 偶々 勝ったは いいが、Eddy が
バーテンをやっている この行きつけのバーから追い
出されてしまった。
こうなると 別の飲み屋を探さねばならない。
ふと入った飲み屋で 呑み助の Wanda なる女性 と
知り合った。
彼女は 自分から こう言った。
”５分の１ｶﾞﾛﾝ入りのウイスキー瓶を手にして わたしん
とこ へ来たらわたし その男と寝ちゃうわ。」
(After fighting Eddy and winning for a change Henry is
thrown out of his regular bar where Eddy is a bartender.
This leads him to seek another watering hole where he
happens to find Wanda who is a barfly, in her own words
"if another man came along with a fifth of whiskey, I'd
go with him". )
「こんな言葉に気後れする Henry ではない。
Henry はWanda に言い寄った。が、Wanda は
勿論 すぐに 立ち去りEddy の処に行き Eddy と
寝たのだ。
暫し後、服やなんかを投げつけあったり 救急車
の世話になったりしたことがあるものの、Henry と
Wanda は なんとかお互いの仲を固めあった。」
(Henry is not fazed by this thou and moves in with her.
Of course Wanda immediately goes off and sleeps with
Eddy, but after some clothes throwing and two visits
from the paramedics Henry and Wanda manage to patch
up their relationship. )
「或る時、女性の出版代理人が Henry を訪ねて来た。
彼の小説のひとつを出版したい、というのだ。
雑誌の名前が気に入った、というので Henry が 出版社
に自分の小説を送り付けていたのである。
Henry は その代理人の家までついて行き、稿料を受け
取り、少々のウイスキーの助けを借りて 代理人と寝た。」
(Then Henry gets a visit from a literary agent who has
decided to publish one of his stories that he sent in
because he "liked the name of the mag". He follows
the agent home to her place in order to receive his
payment and with the help of a little whiskey sleeps
with her. )
「その代理人の家を出て Henry は Wanda のいる
バーへ帰っていったのだが、代理人は やるせない
気持ちになってしまった。
代理人は Henry に 何か特別なモノを感じて恋して
しまったのだ。
で、Henry の後を追い 彼の行きつけのバーに入った。
が、 Wanda と 女どうしの 激しい口喧嘩を始まった。
結局 Wanda に旗が上がった。
新たな恋の芽生え、幸せ、それにお金に余裕ができた
ことを祝して Henry は ﾊﾞｰのみんなに一杯おごり、
”よき友へ”と言って乾杯した.....」
(When he leaves to go back to the bar and back to
Wanda the agent is heartbroken, she sees something
special in Henry and has fallen in love with him.
She follows him to his usual bar and gets into a cat
fight with Wanda that Wanda wins.
In celebration of new found love, happiness and money
Henry buys a round for everyone at the bar and toasts
them "to my friends!"................)
