"sleeper" は 「眠る人」「眠らせてくれるもの (鎮静剤、
睡眠薬など) 」という意味ですが、
「思いがけなく 脚光を浴び ヒットした 長い間 人に知ら
れることなく埋もれていた 映画、タレント、本など」
( a film、a talent or a book that becomes very popular
although it was not expexted to, after a long period of
being inactive or unknown. )
という意味もあります。

sleeper "The Ghostly Keep".
（その若きオランダの作家は ずっと 埋もれていた
「呪われた古城」 という本が 日の目を見て初めて
の成功を収めた。）

ところで、極低温保存 (cryogenically frozen) で眠ら
されていた男が 200年後 に解凍されて ドタバタ劇を
演じるという映画があります。
Woody Allen (1935～ ) が 監督・主演した "Sleeper"
(1973年制作)で、冷凍睡眠から ２００年後の未来世界
で蘇った男の滑稽な経験によって 現代社会を風刺して
います。
邦題は 「冬眠男」。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「健康食品店を営む 怖がり屋で不器用者の Miles Munroe
という男が 冷凍睡眠され、200年くらい後の 未来の世界
で蘇った。
Miles が 予想だにしなかった世界だ。ここでは 法と秩序
が人々を支配しており、法と秩序を逸脱することは 許され
ない。
Miles を 蘇らせたのは 支配勢力に反抗している者たちで、
彼らはMiles に アリーズ(牡牛座) 計画を探らせるために
この世界へ遣わしたのだ。だが、こんな 何もかも機械化
された無感動の世界に Miles は とても我慢ができない。
で、何度も 逃げ出そうとする。
やっとこさで 逃げおおせたMiles に Luna という女性が
彼女の仲間の Erno の革命軍が 近々 勝利を収めるだろう
と 興奮気味に教えた。が、 Miles は 政治的な解決は
うまく 行く筈がなくものの半年もすれは Erno にとって
代わる者が出てくるに違いない、と切り返した。
愛し合っていることをお互いに知ったふたりであったが、
Luna が意味のある関係というものは長続きしない と
が証明しているのよ、と 残念そうに言った。
そんなこと ありゃしないよ、と Miles は 言い返した。
すると Luna は あなたって 科学も 政治体制も 神様でさえ
信用しない人なのね、あなたは 一体 何を信じているの、
と問うた。
人生で 一度限り 経験できる 男か女のいずれかの性で
生まれ出てくること と 必ず死ぬ ということ, それに 死んで
しまえば 何の苦もなくなる ということを 信じているのさ、と
Miles は答えた。
最後に ふたりは 唇を合わせた.........」
"A shy and awkward New York health food store owner,
Miles Munroe, is cryogenically frozen and is awakened
some 200 years in the future. This is not the world Miles
would have expected. Here, law and order is the rule and
dissent of any kind is forbidden.
Those who have re-animated him are rebelling against the
forces that be and they send Miles off into the new world
telling him to look for the Aries project. Miles isn't quite
prepared for the automated, emotionless world that he
faces and it leads to many numerous escapades.
Having successfully escaped, Luna ecstatically proclaims
that Erno's revolution will soon triumph, but Miles retorts
that political solutions never work, adding that in six months,
someone will be stealing Erno's nose. Agreeing that they
love each other, Luna ruefully informs Miles that science
has proven meaningful relationships cannot last. When Miles
refutes the theory, she observes that he does not believe
in science, political systems or God and asks what he does
believe in. Miles answers that he believes in sex and death,
two things that come once in a lifetime, but after death
one is not nauseous. Finally, Miles and Luna kiss............... "
