弱冠20歳で女子ゴルフの全英オープンを制した渋野日向子（しぶの・ひなこ）選手の快挙を、イギリスの新聞 The Telegraph は "Smiling Cinderella" turns "Smiling Assassin" （「笑顔のシンデレラ」 は 「笑顔の暗殺者」 になった）と報じていました。
AIG Women's British Open の最終スコアが示す通り、最終日の彼女はダブルボギーをたたくなど決して好調なゲームメイクではありませんでした。これに対し、2位になったアメリカのサラス選手（30）はこの日 "65" のベストスコアをマークして、渋野選手が18番をスタートした時点では首位に並んでいたのです。
サラス選手はメキシコからの移民である父と二人三脚で共に苦労しながら、アメリカ女子ゴルフの下位リーグからここまで上がってきたことを同記事は伝えています。プレーオフに備えてパットの練習をしていたという彼女は、東洋から来た無名の、しかも初挑戦の新人ゴルファーに、グランドスラム初優勝の夢を打ち砕かれてしまうとは思ってもみなかったでしょう。
その渋野選手を "Smiling Assassin" と呼んだのは、大英勲章を授与されて "Dame" の称号を持つイギリスのベテランゴルファー Laura Davies ですが、最終18番ホールでねじ込んだ強気のバーディーパットは "息の根を止める" 暗殺者の一撃に見えたのかもしれません。
After Shibuno had won one of the majors on the Japanese Ladies Professional Golf Association tour earlier this year, the local press had nicknamed her the “smiling Cinderella”. The daughter of a civil servant from Okayama Prefecture was on Sunday dubbed “the smiling assassin” by Dame Laura Davies, due to the quality of the field the player had beaten. Not least of these was her closest challenger, Lizette Salas, of the United States, who shot an impressive seven-under-par 65 to come from four shots behind over night.
日本でも話題になった、駄菓子の たらたらしてんじゃねーよ のことは記事でも “sweet treats”（おやつ） – to be accurate, Japanese speciality sweets と取り上げられていますが、その原料は、正確に言うと "made from squid or seaweed（イカや海藻）" ではなく、"made from fish meat（魚肉）" のようです。
それはさておき、おとぎ話のシンデレラは王子様と結婚して "めでたし、めでたし" のハッピーエンドでしたが、現実のシンデレラは長いゴルフ人生がまだ始まったばかりです。プロ一年目でとてつもなく大きな夢を実現してしまった彼女には、次の目標を見失うことなく頑張ってもらいたいものです。もっとも、メディアとのやり取りが時として "verging on the surreal（シュールで理解しがたい）" と評される彼女のことですから、これまで誰も見たことのない世界に、私たちを連れていってくれることを期待してもいいのかもしれません。
Just as she does things differently on the course, Shibuno’s interactions with the media were at times verging on the surreal. She was more than happy to play up the Cinderella line, saying that she could not “compare the trophy with Prince Charming” and was quick to reply that the first thing she would spend some of her £540,000 prize money on would be “sweet treats” – to be accurate, Japanese speciality sweets made from squid or seaweed. At this point, Shibuno was almost speechless with laughter.
