Three months after my last meal out, here’s what I had.

When travelers come to Japan, I often hear that they want to eat sushi or wagyu beef.

But in reality, most Japanese people don’t eat those foods on a regular basis.

They’re more of an occasional treat unless you’re quite wealthy.

For everyday meals, many people eat noodles such as ramen or udon, rice dishes like Japanese curry or gyudon (beef bowls), savory bread from bakeries, or teishoku—set meals that usually include grilled or fried meat or fish, rice, miso soup, and a few side dishes. Personally, teishoku is my favorite.

Of course, I’m not saying you shouldn’t try the iconic foods that Japan is famous for.

Not at all!

But I also highly recommend visiting the kinds of places that local people love, such as casual diners and small neighborhood Chinese restaurants.

They offer a taste of everyday Japan that many visitors end up enjoying just as much.

3ヶ月ぶりの外食で食ったものを載せます。

日本で旅の皆さんが食べるのは寿司とか和牛とかよく聞きますが、実際の日本人は日常にそういうもの食べてる人は、お金持ちだけで、日本で多くはラーメンやうどんなどの麺類、またはカレーや牛丼などのご飯もの、惣菜パン、そして僕が好きなメインとなる肉や魚を焼いたり揚げたりしたオカズ、ごはん、味噌汁などを合わせた定食というセットメニューなどが多いかと思います。

もちろん日本に来たからと日本をイメージするメニューを否定するつもりは全くありませんが、ぜひ日本人が好きな大衆食堂、町中華なども経験してみることもオススメします。

I have a lot of friends from my travels, and many of them are wonderfully unique in their own ways.

This time, a friend who has traveled around the world fishing came to visit me in Kyoto.

After casually checking out the Gion Festival, we spent the rest of the day hopping from one standing bar to another.

If you only look at guidebooks, you might think Kyoto is nothing but temples and shrines.

But the city has so much more to offer—neighborhoods full of young creative culture, lively shopping streets, riverside spots where locals spend their time, and many wonderful areas that most tourists never discover.

One of the things I love most about Kyoto is how its standing bar culture has grown over the past ten years or so.

Of course, Kyoto still has many traditional kakuuchi bars, where you can enjoy a drink inside a liquor store.

But at the same time, many new standing bars have opened, especially around the Shijo-Omiya area.

Living in a city with such a long history reminds me that it’s also important to appreciate the people and places creating its next chapter.

I always try to keep an eye on the new history being made, not just the old.

僕はたくさんの旅関連の仲間がいる

みんな、一癖二癖ある旅人が多いのだが、今回は世界中で釣りをしてきた旅人が京都に遊びに来てくれた

祇園祭をなんとなく見た後は、あとはひたすら立ち飲み屋をまわった

京都はガイドブックを見てると寺と神社しかないんじゃないかくらいに思ってしまうが、若者の文化が集まる場所だったり、商店街や川を楽しむ生活感のある場所だったり、観光客が知らない素敵なエリアがたくさんある

僕はこの10年くらいの京都の立ち飲み屋文化の発展がすごく好きだ。もちろん古くからある角打ち（酒屋で飲む）も京都はたくさん残っているが、新しい立ち飲み屋さんが四条大宮とかを中心にたくさんできている

歴史ある街に住んでるからこそ、新しい歴史を作ってるものにも目を向けていきたいなといつも思ってます

Photos of the travelers I met at Guesthouse Kingyoya in June ④ (Sorry for the very late post!)

This is the final post in my four-part series of photos taken with everyone at checkout or in the common room during June.

🙇‍♂️ If you’re thinking, “Hey, I took a photo with you too!” but don’t see yourself here, there’s a good chance I simply forgot to take it. Also, if you checked out on or after July 2, your photo will be included next month.

This final post features the moments we shared in the common room—talking, laughing, and enjoying drinks together.

Unlike a hotel, the common room is the heart of a guesthouse.

I hope the time you spent there with everyone becomes one of your special memories of Kyoto and Japan. (When I think back on my own travels when I was younger, it’s the people I met that I remember most.)

ホテルと違いゲストハウスはこの共有室がとても大切。ここでの皆さんとの時間自体が京都の、そして日本の大切な思い出になって貰えば嬉しく思います（僕も若い頃の旅で覚えてるのは人々との出会いばかりです）

Photos with the travelers I met at Guesthouse Kingyoya in June ②(Sorry for the long delay!)

I’ll be sharing the rest of the June photos over the next four posts.

These are photos we took together at check-out or while hanging out in the common room.

🙇‍♂️ If you’re thinking, “Hey, I took a photo with you too!” but don’t see yourself, there’s a good chance I accidentally missed taking it.

Also, if you checked out on or after July 2, your photos will be included next month.

June had beautiful weather, and we ended up taking lots of photos together in the common room, so I’ll share those all together at the end.
