A wonderful photographer who stayed with us in mid-June kindly sent us these photos she took at Guest House Kingyoya on her last day！

She originally came from New York and is now living in Seoul.

She captured these photos with her amazing camera, and while she was shooting, her friend—who works as a model—took some behind-the-scenes photos of the session.

I’m truly grateful that someone who usually photographs stylish people and professional models took the time to photograph a chubby, not-so-photogenic old guy like me🤣

Thank you so much for the wonderful memories.

We have created a leaflet introducing Funaoka Onsen, a historic bathhouse located just a 7-minute walk from our guesthouse.

With over 100 years of history, it is not only one of Kyoto’s most famous public baths but also one of the most renowned sento in all of Japan.

For the price of a regular public bath, you can enjoy a wide range of facilities, including an outdoor bath, sauna, and electric bath.

The beautifully preserved wooden architecture, intricate carvings, and unique decorations in the changing rooms are worth seeing on their own.

Funaoka Onsen welcomes many international visitors, and tattoos are allowed.

A sento is more than just a place to wash and soak in hot water.

It has long been an important space where people connect with one another and build a sense of community.

We hope you’ll take the opportunity to experience this unique part of Japanese culture during your stay.

普通の銭湯の値段で露天風呂、サウナ、電気風呂など充実の施設に加え、脱衣所のタオルや建築模様は一見の価値ありです

海外のお客様も多く、タトゥーがあっても入れます

銭湯はただ体を洗い湯に浸かるだけの場所でなく、人々の関わりやつながりの大切なは場所です

♪ Fire prevention, one match can start a fire — even if you’re grilling saury, don’t burn down the house.

In Nishijin, where Guesthouse Kingyoya is located, you can often hear the sound of wooden clappers around 8:00 p.m., and sometimes children sing this song as they walk through the neighborhood.

This is a local community activity to remind people to be careful about fire. In the past, many Japanese houses were made of wood, and a single fire could spread quickly through an entire neighborhood. Because of this, people developed the tradition of patrolling the streets at night and calling out reminders about fire safety.

Guests from overseas often ask, “What is that sound?”

This is not unique to Kyoto.

It is a traditional fire-prevention custom found in many parts of Japan.

The songs and chants may vary from place to place, but the idea remains the same: protecting the community by helping everyone stay aware of fire safety.

♪火の用心 マッチ一本 火事のもと、秋刀魚焼いても家焼くな

ゲストハウス金魚家のある西陣では、夜20時前後になると拍子木の音が聞こえてきて、時には子どもたちがこの歌を歌いながら町を歩いています。

これは地域の人たちが火災予防を呼びかけるための活動です。昔の日本の家は木造が多く、一度火事になると町全体に燃え広がることもありました。そのため、夜に町を巡回しながら火の用心を呼びかける習慣が生まれました。

海外からのお客さんによく「この音は何ですか？」と聞かれます。

これは京都だけのものではありません。日本各地に残る伝統的な防火活動のひとつです。地域によって歌や掛け声は少し異なりますが、「火事を防ぎ、みんなで町を守る」という思いは今も受け継がれています。

Photos with travelers I met at Guest House Kingyoya in May ④

🙇 This is the final part of our four-post May photo series. (If you’re thinking, “Hey, I took a photo with you too!” there’s a good chance I simply forgot to take one. Also, if you checked out on or after June 1st, your photo will appear next month!)

In addition to the photos I try to take when guests leave, May brought beautiful weather and very few mosquitoes.

We were able to keep the door between the common room and the courtyard open, so I also took many photos of everyone enjoying drinks, chatting together, and having breakfast.

I’ll share some of those at the end as well.

I’ve met people from more than 60 countries here, and lately these conversations in the common room have become my own way of traveling the world.

It’s all thanks to you.

I feel a little sorry for making everyone put up with my poor English conversation skills, but I truly enjoy every moment of it. 😅

5月にゲストハウス金魚家で出会った旅人との写真です④

🙇5月はなんと4回に分けて載せます（もし、4回の間に「私も一緒に撮ったのに！」という方は、たぶん僕が撮りミスってる可能性が高いです。また6月1日以降にチェックアウトされた方は、来月載せます）

出発する時に可能な限り撮らせてもらってる写真に加えて、5月は気候も良く、蚊も少なくて、共有室と中庭の間のドアを開けて、みんなで飲んだり、おしゃべりしたり、または朝食を食べてる時間の写真もたくさん撮ったので、それも最後に共有します

僕はここで60カ国以上の人と会ってきてますが、最近はこの共有室での会話が僕の世界の旅のようになってます

みなさんのおかげです

僕の下手くそな英会話に付き合わせてしまってることを申し訳なく思いますが、本当に楽しいです😅

These are photos with travelers I met at Guest House Kingyoya in May ③

🙇 We ended up splitting the May photos into four posts! (If you’re thinking, “Hey, I took a photo with you too!” and you don’t appear in any of them, there’s a good chance I simply forgot to take the picture. Sorry about that!)

From mid-May onward, we had quite a few guests staying for 3–5 nights.

Having more time together made it easier to chat and get to know each other, so the common room was lively on many evenings.

I highly recommend staying for multiple nights!

5月中旬からは連泊で3〜5泊する方がけっこう来て頂けて、いっぱいお話しする時間があり、コミュニケーションがとりやすかったからか、共有室が賑やかな日が多かったです
